This generous grant will support our ongoing efforts to protect the Western Arctic—the largest single unit of public land in the United States—by helping us to continue advocating for the maximum protections, including the designation of Special Areas. These designations are crucial for preserving the most vulnerable habitats within the Western Arctic, protecting them from the threats posed by oil and gas development. Last week marked a milestone in our advocacy efforts with the close of the Biden administration's RFI for the Western Arctic—a big step toward securing more protections and Special Areas. During the RFI period, we jumped into action, leading a powerful campaign to highlight the urgent need for new Special Areas in the Western Arctic. We were at the forefront, driving grassroots support, connecting with local advocates, and ensuring the administration heard loud and clear just how crucial these protections and future processes are for America’s Arctic. Expanding these protections is essential for addressing climate change, protecting sacred land, and conserving Arctic wildlife. This has been a top priority since President Biden took office, and while there’s still work ahead, we’re closer to the finish line. Tonight, I had the incredible honor of presenting the Wilderness Champion Award to Ranking Member Congressman Raul M Grijalva for not only leading a Resolution recognizing September 3, 2024, as the 60th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act but also for championing countless bills to designate wilderness, conserve wilderness values, advance tribal co-management of public lands and waters, and foster equitable access to public lands and waters. His support for wilderness conservation and environmental justice – especially for those traditionally excluded from these movements – has left a lasting legacy, from Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park. #PublicLands #Conservation #EnvironmentalJustice

Apply now: https://bit.ly/3Wt4jGq Established in 2022 in memory of Alaska Wilderness League’s late executive director, the Adam Kolton Alaska Storytelling Grant is a $20,000 annual award to a professional storyteller with experience living in Alaska who tells a uniquely Alaskan story. Adam dedicated his career to protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and led Alaska Wilderness League as its executive director from 2017 to 2021. The Storytelling Grant aims to acknowledge the memory of Adam, who recognized the power of promoting stories from Alaska, including those shared by Indigenous Gwich’in partners and members of Alaska’s Tribal nations. In particular, Adam believed in the power of storytelling to create a meaningful and lasting memory of Alaska and its environment. The grant is supported by contributions made to the Adam Kolton Memorial Fund.
