The Alaska World Affairs Council is a focused educational organization dedicated to stimulating interest in world affairs and inspiring its members to be involved in world events. The Council strives to provide the population with a wide spectrum of viewpoints and information while not taking a stand on current-day issues, guided by the conviction that better community education in world affairs is necessary for sound democratic citizenship.
Last week, we were honored to welcome Dr. Jonathan Noble, Senior Assistant Provost for Internationalization and Global Executive Director at Notre Dame Global, along with Ms. Lisa Eyler and Mr. Richard Marshall from the Alaska World Affairs Council, to the Ted Stevens Center. Our discussions focused on the critical importance of security cooperation and identifying future opportunities for collaboration.

This week we were honored to welcome Jonathan Noble to Alaska for a series of insightful discussions! From a thought-provoking luncheon at Bear Tooth with community members and students from Romig Middle School, South Anchorage High School, and UAA, to a meeting with our valued partners at the Ted Stevens Center, his visit was full of meaningful connections. Jonathan also engaged with UAA faculty and spoke directly to students at South High School during an in-school visit.

James Jordan is the News Director for Europe and Africa for The Associated Press where he overseas more than over 200 journalists in all formats across two continents. He has overseen the global news agency’s award-winning coverage from Ukraine and interviewed Zelenskyy twice – most recently in November, when he travelled to Kupiansk with the president. In June 2024, he travelled to Russia and met President Putin making him one of the few journalists to have interviewed both leaders.

Bastille Day, celebrated on July 14th, commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, a pivotal event that sparked the French Revolution. It symbolizes the unity of the French people and the triumph of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Yesterday we had the honor of attending the 11th Airborne Division Change of Command Ceremony, where we witnessed Major General Brian S. Eifler pass command to Major General Joseph E. Hilbert. As if on cue, a bald eagle soared overhead during the ceremony, symbolizing the freedom and strength our service members protect.
Our organization deeply values our partnership with the military, working together to bring global perspectives and world events to Alaska. We extend our deepest gratitude to Major General Eifler for his exemplary leadership and warmly welcome Major General Hilbert as he takes on this vital role.
