A BIG Partnership announcement for us! We are working with Wiley to bring our accessible interactives to general chemistry in Knewton Alta. Such great alignment in our vision for learning. “We were particularly impressed with the accessibility of Alchemie’s tools, which is so important in reaching all students. These interactives will provide direct benefits to students who use our courseware, helping build STEM skills and improve long-term learning.” -Lyssa Vanderbeek https://lnkd.in/gJX6JZgy

"Born Accessible" learning technology for chemistry.
Such a journey! "Unprecedented access to online visualization tools for chemistry;" Alchemie's partnership with Wiley bringing innovative accessibility to STEM education. At #BCCE 2018, Cary Supalo highlighted our development and design blind spot, igniting a transformative journey. From multisensory learning with computer vision to dynamically-generated alt text for interactives, our focus on intuitive access for screen reader users is reshaping the landscape of accessible learning. With 6 research studies involving blind students and their teachers, 3 published papers, and the support of 7 federal grants, we are driving innovation in creating "born accessible" learning technology for STEM. Tipping hat to those who have supported us: Amanda Miller, Michelle Renda (+ Wiley's amazing team), Edward Metz + Institute of Education Sciences, Rajesh Mehta, Lindsay Portnoy, PhD + National Science Foundation (NSF), Tony Beck + National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Brian Bard + NIDILRR, Jennifer Nakamura, Shari Gardner + SRI Education #STEMeducation #Accessibility #Innovation #Alchemie #Wiley #Partnership #SBIR

"Accessible-by-design and usable by all." Thanks to National Science Foundation (NSF) support, Alchemie has created unique accessible interfaces for digital learning tools for STEM. With this new Journal of Chemical Education paper we introduce these interfaces, and the co-design process that was important in their development. We report results from three different studies - one with blind users, one with over 300 sighted college students, and one with chemistry faculty. Congrats to new authors Alexa Urrea Debra Nischik and nicole kada! Plus Sarah Wegwerth and Gianna Manchester. So much more to come with our newest NSF grant! A big award for Alchemie. And for Accessibility.
“You could drop the whole science thing, move on to drawing in general, go into architecture." A quote from a study participant (who is blind) during the usability test of our new user interface for a chemistry drawing tool. We are so excited to announce Alchemie's latest NSF SBIR Phase II award for inclusive learning systems for STEM. Alt text is generated in real-time as the interactive is used and can be used by all students to understand concepts better. So much more to come! Big thanks to those who have supported us. "Accessible-by-design and usable by all" Our new paper (pre-print) on the Lewis Structure explorer - its design and development. Tested with over 300 sighted college students and 4 blind/low-vision adults. Creating born-accessible STEM interactives requires co-design with end users (shout out to you, nicole kada!) and many iterations to build the dynamic alt text generation system for digital learning tools. Co-authors: Sarah Wegwerth Alexa Urrea Debra Nischik and kudos to Alchemie team + National Science Foundation (NSF) #SBIR Rajesh Mehta Lindsay Portnoy, PhD Sean Hickey and Wayne State University, too! https://lnkd.in/d6nYMEAP
