Good morning! 👋🏼 Here is a brief on key global events that our Global Intelligence Team has been monitoring overnight into this morning (8/27), including updates from the ongoing conflict in Russia and Ukraine: ▪ #Russia launched a new wave of airstrikes on #Ukraine, targeting the country's energy infrastructure and causing blackouts and water outages. The attacks killed at least four people in Kryvyi Rih and Zaporizhzhia, following a massive assault on Monday. Ukrainian air defenses were active overnight as Russian bombers took off, with officials reporting widespread missile and drone threats.   ▪ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Grossi began his visit to Russia's Kursk nuclear plant today to assess safety conditions amid ongoing regional conflict. The visit follows reports of drone fragments found near the plant, raising concerns about the risks of fighting around nuclear facilities. Grossi emphasized the IAEA's commitment to ensuring nuclear safety. The #Kursk plant, close to the Russia-Ukraine border, uses reactor types like those at Chernobyl, though with significant safety upgrades. Both Russia and Ukraine have been urged to exercise maximum restraint.    ▪ In response to a deadly stabbing in #Solingen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to accelerate deportations of rejected asylum seekers and tighten weapons laws. The attack, which claimed three lives and was linked to a Syrian #asylum seeker, fueled criticism from far-right groups ahead of state elections. Scholz emphasized that such terrorism threatens #Germany's society and vowed to take action to prevent future incidents. The government is also exploring reforms to ensure quicker deportations of violent offenders.    ▪Police in #India used tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters in #Kolkata demanding the resignation of a state minister following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The attack, which took place on August 9, sparked nationwide outrage and #protests led by university students. Despite the Supreme Court's request for doctors to return to work, many continue their strike, demanding justice and better safety for women. Over 5,000 police officers have been deployed in response to the escalating protests.    ▪ Severe #flooding is in progress across Gujarat, India, and Sindh, Pakistan. Impacts are most widespread in #Gujarat, with four deaths, 4,000 residents evacuated, 56 trains canceled, and schools and colleges closed. The equivalent of a minimal tropical cyclone is slowly moving westward while producing prolific rain totals. Red (highest tier) rain warnings are expected to remain in effect across Gujarat through August 29. Authorities in Karachi are bracing for worsening impacts through the end of the week, with localized rain amounts near 20 in (500 mm) possible.   Feel free to share this brief and follow for daily global updates. 🌎
