As we observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) this October, the DEI committee wants to share an article from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that explains how disability inclusion acts as a cornerstone for health equity for both providers and patients. The CDC emphasizes that achieving health equity requires a comprehensive approach to disability inclusion. It explains how barriers like physical inaccessibility, communication challenges, and social stigmas prevent people with disabilities from fully engaging in healthcare and public health programs. The article then outlines strategies to overcome these barriers, such as making healthcare environments ADA-compliant, implementing accessible communication methods, and promoting disability awareness among healthcare staff. It highlights that addressing these issues is crucial for enabling people with disabilities to achieve better health outcomes and for fostering an inclusive society that values diversity as part of the human experience. The CDC emphasizes that disability inclusion is not only a legal responsibility but also a moral imperative in building equitable healthcare systems for all. AlignMed Partners is proud to spotlight a member of our corporate team this week: meet Zukeila C., a Payer Credentialing Specialist who’s been working with AlignMed for the past 7 years! So what exactly does a credentialing specialist do? “In my current role as a Payer Credentialing Specialist, I manage the process of getting providers who are either physicians, physician assistants or nurse practitioners credentialed with Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial Insurances so that AlignMed Partners receives compensation for services given.” Zukeila is a highly qualified specialist, with a background in both medical billing and health insurance, with over 17 years of experience. She started with AlignMed 7 years ago as a Medical Billing Specialist, and when her department went through changes, she was offered her current position as a credentialing specialist. “Change is inevitable and something I embrace, so when the position was offered to me, I expressed an interest in learning something new to add to my repertoire. With my previous work experience, being a payer credentialist ties it all together for me as it gives me more insight and understanding to how everything is connected. Since I've been in this position, I've learned so much and I work with wonderful people who gave their time and talents to teach me everything I now know about credentialing. AlignMed Partners is great at allowing me a work/life balance that I never really had with previous employers.” When asked about Zukeila, here’s what her manager, Liz, had to say: “Zukeila is a valuable member of the team who has such a positive attitude and is always willing to learn new things and improve on processes. She also has great taste in TV shows and always gives good recommendations!” Something you may not know about Zukeila? She loves the outdoors, especially hiking! “I actually fell into it by accident! I've always enjoyed walking for exercise, but was getting tired of walking the same places, so I joined a group that I thought was just a regular walking group. I realized (very quickly) it wasn't a walking group when we were deep in the woods climbing steep hills and crossing streams (which I was not prepared for wearing my sneakers!). I'm so glad I made the "mistake" of hiking, because now I love it and do it every chance I get (especially this time of year). Not only is it great for my health, I find that it calms me to be in nature and is a great stress reliever.” The picture attached was taken at Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, MD. #alignmedpartners #spotlight #corporate

This week, we’re spotlighting Anita O., an AlignMed Partners Nurse Practitioner from Connecticut who has been with us since 2022! What inspired her to work as an NP in our setting? “Practicing the majority of my RN career in a sub-acute long-term setting, it was not a difficult decision to continue as a Nurse Practitioner in the same setting. I love the flexibility and little autonomy working in this setting offers, and there are various opportunities to grow and continue developing skills. For instance, I have learned the concept of incorporating a shared care environment." While already a skilled NP, Anita continues to set goals for herself: “I see myself continuing to develop my skills and expertise in geriatrics, palliative care, and other certifications. I hope to be a mentor and teacher, educating nurses and new nurse practitioners in clinical practice.” Today, Anita is in the process of obtaining her palliative care certification: “This has been particularly beneficial in my primary practice place, which includes a vent unit where end-of-life care can be a challenging topic for loved ones. Palliative care has equipped me with the skills to navigate these discussions sensitively. I have learned when to initiate these discussions, how to ask the right questions, and how to guide loved ones in making the best decisions. With a palliative certification, I am confident that I can better serve my patients and their families during these difficult times.” Another aspect of her work which she excels in is productivity. Anita gives her advice on how other providers can achieve their productivity goals: “ I will advise them to create a daily routine schedule and map out a specific time for visits and another time for reviewing and documenting. Aim to follow this routine the best you can and communicate this routine to nursing, patients, and families. It may be difficult at first, but it will help you plan with time. Another crucial aspect is the use of the PCC dashboard. I rely on it, and the daily nursing supervisor reports to prioritize my daily visits. The dashboard provides valuable information...Familiarize yourself with navigating the dashboard daily to stay informed and proactive in your patient care. Lastly, I follow up with 2-3 of my high-risk patients daily, even when they appear stable. These are your critical patients, those with a high hospitalization rate, fall risk, chronic wound, poor PO intake, and those who are new to the facility. In my experience, the majority of these visits have revealed subtle changes.” Aside from being a talented Nurse Practitioner, Anita is also a mother, sharing with us a special moment from her home life: “I am a mother of two beautiful girls. No matter how busy it may get, I am the only one who braids their hair. Most times, they have imaginative hairstyles that they want, and most styles often may take hours to complete. In all, I love doing it; we bond through these experiences.”
