In 100 years of life, Ms. Margaret Sutton is a portrait of resilience, faith, and commitment to service. Despite her active life, Ms. Sutton faced a health challenge at the age of 99. After experiencing heart fluttering, she was diagnosed with severe mitral regurgitation. She shared with her cardiologist Dr. Melina Aguinaga-Meza, that she wanted to be healthy enough to celebrate her upcoming 100th birthday. Her doctors recommended a mitral valve clip procedure. Dr. Samir Kapadia performed the successful procedure, and Ms. Sutton regained her independence, driving herself to cardiac rehab each week. Ms. Sutton celebrated her 100th birthday in November 2024 surrounded by more than 100 loved ones. The event was filled with surprises, including a citation from the Governor honoring her extraordinary life and dedication to her community. Raised by a father with deep Southern roots and a family history shaped by slavery, Ms. Sutton was instilled with the values of education and respect. Guided by her father’s wisdom, she pursued nursing and became a surgical nurse, dedicating many years to the heart operating rooms at St. Vincent Hospital. Later, she moved to Forest City Hospital, where she retired in 1976 as a charge nurse. Her commitment to service did not end with her nursing career. A deeply devout Christian, Ms. Sutton continued her education in Christian Education, driven by a desire to teach and inspire others. In her eighties, she spent several summers teaching in the West Indies as part of her mission work. She volunteered at organizations across Northeast Ohio, including a dialysis center and South Pointe Hospital’s pastoral care ministry. Ms. Sutton is also an active member at her church, Mount Olive Baptist Church in Twinsburg. If you ask her for words of wisdom, she’ll simply state with a laugh she has no secrets. But she credits her longevity to her strong faith and living a healthy, active life, filled with giving back to others.
