As a global citizen who has lived across Asia, Europe, and the U.S., Reshmi Khurana Laroia knows well the powerful roles women hold across the map. Top of mind for her this #WomensHistoryMonth? Sparking inspiration by sharing stories about the diverse successes and challenges women experience around the world. “I have been in Asia for the last 16 years. In both Mumbai and Singapore, I have lived in a nuclear family where both my husband and I work. Throughout, we’ve relied on migrant domestic workers, all women. Their support has had a major role in the success of my career, helping me raise a family so I could execute complex projects or take long work trips. These women are leaders in their own right. We need role models at all stages. I was first inspired to be a leader by my parents, who I have seen step up repeatedly for their communities, family, and careers. Now, I also find inspiration from many of my older women friends and colleagues, some who have retired and some who are active professionally. Their stories are fuel for others – like how to chart the next chapter, whether taking on board roles, leadership positions at companies, starting new businesses, becoming angel investors, or investing in our mental and physical wellbeing. At AlixPartners, I try to apply the same lens. While I lacked ‘people like me’ to learn from, I did benefit from good mentors, inspiring role models and thoughtful leadership. We still have work to do but I, and other women who had similar experiences in our early careers, are committed to helping talented women thrive in their careers and become mentors to others further down the line.” Catherine’s personal brand of “can-do” leadership, calmness under pressure, and a relentless “let’s fix this” attitude has made her a role model in navigating and driving change. After a successful career in turnaround consulting and private equity, former AlixPartners Director Luke Ericson is now driving the next phase of growth at Gibson, the iconic 130-year-old guitar maker. Luke attributes the rapid pace of his career development to AlixPartners, where he had the chance to work hands-on with brilliant people across a variety of industries and companies. "The benefit of consulting is you get lots of repetitions, and the pace of learning is so much faster than in a traditional corporate role,” Luke explains.   Though he has moved on from AlixPartners, Luke remains closely connected through former colleagues and his wife, whom he met at the firm and who still works there. “You form deep friendships working in challenging, high-stakes situations,” he says. When you’ve visited 30 countries and lived in four, you develop a serious appetite for cultural learning— just ask Rosalie Rukerebuka. Rosalie is an avid traveler with a particular passion for solo trips that push her out of her comfort zone, expanding her worldview. “After experiencing people of African heritage in the workforce in three different continents and economies, I learned so much. It is easy to get caught up in a social construct of whichever country you're living in and their societal norms. Wherever you live, I think it's important to advocate for your own capabilities and maintain a sense of self, which you should nurture internally outside of how people perceive you.” Rosalie brings enthusiasm for individuality to work, where she leads Diversity & Inclusion talent acquisition strategy. In between travels, she finds inspiration by visiting museums, spending time in nature, and learning about Black leaders like the late Wangari Maathai, Kenyan activist and the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. “Maathai is known for her activism and resilience in the face of challenge. She was also the first East and Central African woman to receive a PhD – focused on environmental and women’s rights, all while facing adversity at almost every step.
