#LatexAllergyAwarenessWeek is still going strong and it’s time to talk about latex cross reactivity with certain foods. Did you know that people with latex allergies can develop allergic reactions to some fruits and vegetables? In fact, about half of people with a latex allergy may develop allergy symptoms from avocado, banana or kiwi.🥝🍌🥑 This happens due to cross reactivity. Some proteins in natural rubber latex are similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables. At the same time, people with food allergies to certain fruits and vegetables may have allergic reactions to latex. This may occur in approximately 10% of food allergic individuals. Learn more about which foods have the potential to cross react with latex. #LatexAllergyAwarenessWeek #LAAW https://lnkd.in/e9XuGxpq

Were you not able to attend our recent ‘Health Insurance Hacks: Overcoming Medication Coverage Hurdles’ webinar with Melissa Paige, CPhT? Here are the key takeaways for you! Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Prior authorization is when your doctor must get approval from your insurance company before you can get certain medications or treatments. This process has different names, like prior approval, pre-service review, or precertification. It makes sure the insurance will cover what the doctor prescribes. Sometimes this can be confusing, but it's a step to make sure the treatment is covered by your plan. 2️⃣ If insurance denies coverage, you’ll get a letter explaining why. You can appeal the decision, meaning you ask the insurance to reconsider. There are usually two chances to appeal: once with the insurance company (internal appeal), and if that doesn’t work, through an outside group (external appeal). Always read the denial letter carefully to know your next steps. 3️⃣ There are programs to help people pay for medications. These include free medication, co-pay assistance, and financial help for those with or without insurance. Patients should ask their doctor or pharmacist about assistance programs that can lower costs, even if they have insurance. Sometimes, high deductibles or other costs can still make medication expensive, but these programs can help. 4️⃣ Medication access coordinators help patients get their medicines. They can check what costs are covered, help with refills, and answer questions. They also look for long-term solutions, like helping patients apply for free medications while waiting for insurance approval. The goal is to make sure patients can use their insurance and pay for their treatments, so free drugs are only used as a last option. 5️⃣ Medication access coordinators guide patients through filling out forms. Some medicines need different applications depending on if the patient has insurance or not. Coordinators make sure forms are filled out correctly and sent to the right place. They follow up with insurance companies, drugmakers, and pharmacies to ensure the patient gets their medication on time. They also keep track of refills and make sure everything runs smoothly. Your health matters, and so does your safety when visiting medical facilities. If you have a latex allergy, here's what you should do before your next appointment: 1️⃣ Advance Notice: Before heading to the facility, give them a heads up about your latex allergy. Let them know you need to avoid latex-containing items. 2️⃣ No Latex Products: Ask your healthcare team – doctor, dentist, physician assistant, nurse, etc. – not to use latex products, especially gloves, during your examination. Request that they remove any latex items from your examination room. 3️⃣ Latex Equipment: Ensure that latex equipment like stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs are fully covered to prevent direct skin contact. 4️⃣ Bandages and Dressings: Request bandages and dressings that are latex-free, made without natural rubber latex. 5️⃣ Syringes and Vials: Confirm that syringes and vial stoppers do not contain latex to avoid any allergic reactions. 6️⃣ Dental Care: For dental visits, ask for silicone braces bands and non-latex dental dams, suction tubes, goggles, and masks to keep your oral health in check without any latex-related issues. 7️⃣ Pharmacy Reminder: Don't forget to remind your pharmacist about your latex allergy. Ask them not to use latex gloves or equipment when filling your prescription. These steps can help ensure a safe and allergy-free experience during your medical visits. Share this post to raise awareness about latex allergies and empower others to advocate for their health! https://lnkd.in/e9XuGxpq #LAAW
