NEW CANCEL CULTURE CASE: Once again, a university DEI Office is using “no-contact” orders to silence and punish students for free speech. This time, it’s Virginia’s George Mason University—and the targets are two female law students at GMU’s Antonin Scalia School of Law.   Selene Cerankosky and Maria Arcara are third-year law students. In a “Scalia Law ‘25” GroupMe chat, a male law student informed the group that he submitted a proposal to add feminine hygiene products to male restrooms. He then solicited comments in an open discussion.   In response, Selene shared her concern that if women accessed male restrooms, men could seek similar access to women’s spaces, which would violate her safety and privacy as well as her religious convictions about human sexuality. Maria agreed. The male student then accused them of bigotry and complained to the DEI Office.   Two weeks later, the university issued “no-contact” orders to Selene and Maria, prohibiting them from any contact with the male student. They were given no warning or chance to defend themselves against these orders, which carry the potential for expulsion from school and scrutiny in their legal careers.   “Selene and Maria respectfully voiced their opinion about biological differences between men and women,” explained ADF’s Tyson Langhofer. “Because of this, their academic and professional careers are now in serious jeopardy. George Mason’s policy is far too subjective and allows university officials to punish students simply because their opinions about hotly debated social issues don’t align with their own.”   On Friday, we filed a federal lawsuit against GMU on behalf of Selene and Maria. We are urging the court to restore the students’ First Amendment rights and order GMU to stop enforcing its policy against protected speech.
