“For me and for most girls I know, the fact that males are participating in our sports takes all the fun out of competing.” From overnight trips, to locker rooms, to athletic competition, high school sophomore and ADF client Adaleia Cross has run into a male student in private spaces numerous times. Fortunately, SCOTUS has, for now, stopped the Biden-Harris admin from radically redefining Title IX. ✍ Adaleia shares why she’s joining other women and girls to keep biology in Title IX for good.

TEACHER VINDICATED 🙌 A Virginia school board has learned an expensive lesson in respecting First Amendment rights. After it fired teacher Peter Vlaming for declining to use inaccurate pronouns, the West Point School Board will now pay $575,000 in damages and attorney fees. That’s the outcome of a lawsuit ADF filed in 2019 on Vlaming’s behalf. Last year, in a sweeping victory for free speech and religious freedom, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that his case could move forward. Now, the school district has agreed to a settlement. “Peter wasn’t fired for something he said; he was fired for something he couldn’t say,” said ADF Senior Counsel Chris Schandevel, who argued Vlaming’s case before the court. “As a teacher, Peter was passionate about the subject he taught, was well-liked by his students, and did his best to accommodate their needs and requests. But he couldn’t in good conscience speak messages that he doesn’t believe to be true. And no school board or government official can punish someone for that reason.” In addition to the payout, West Point has cleared Vlaming’s firing from his record. Apart from the settlement agreement, the district also changed its policies to conform to Virginia’s new statewide education policies, which respect free speech and parental rights. No government should force its employees—or anyone else—to voice their allegiance to an ideology that violates their deepest beliefs. That’s what West Point did when it tried to force Peter Vlaming to endorse its own view of gender identity. We’re glad Peter had the courage to stand by his convictions—and thankful he’s now been vindicated.
