As Hurricane Milton approaches, following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, Florida is preparing for what could be the largest evacuation in seven years. The relentless storms battering our communities are a stark reminder of the escalating climate crisis fueled by fossil fuel companies. For over 70 years, they’ve known the truth: our planet is warming due to fossil fuel pollution from the burning of coal, oil, and gas. Warmer oceans cause more intense storms like Helene and Milton. With the election fast approaching, let this serve as a reminder that we are in desperate need of bold, climate centered leadership that prioritizes people over profit. #HurricaneMilton #HurricaneHelene

Due to Hurricane Milton, which is currently approaching Florida's west coast as a strong category 5 storm and bringing a potential for strong winds and dangerous flooding to #SouthFlorida this week, the Strength in Solidarity: Confronting Hate Together town hall scheduled for tomorrow evening has been postponed until a later date. Hosted by Transinclusive Group, The Pride Center, Broward State Attorney's Office, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida, Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO), Fort Lauderdale Police Department, and many other partners, this important town hall focused on the impact of hate crimes on our #community will be postponed until a later date. In light of the approaching hurricane, we urge everyone to stay safe and take necessary precautions in preparation. The safety of our community is our top priority, and we will keep you updated on the rescheduling of the town hall. We encourage everyone to make a safety plan and visit hurricanes.gov for storm updates and ready.gov for important tips on safety and preparedness.

Our collective history is ingrained in our movement and our memory. As we continue our mission to prevent suicide amongst LGBTQ+ young people, we honor those heroes of queer, trans, and intersex history whose visibility and vulnerability mixed with courage of conviction led to social, political, and cultural change. Here again after I wrote a semi-viral post a few months ago to literally say the same thing. Pay Blac/k people. Pay people from marginalised groups when you ask for their expertise and time in your events/work. So just to be clear- expecting free labour from Blac/k communities is infact racist practice. Paying for their lunch or travel is NOT payment! As the intersectional pay gap gets wider- let's think about our contribution to that reality. This week alone- I've said no to two "work for exposure" gigs! As they were oiling their tongues describing their exploitation strategy for my expertise- I was told I am an inspiration- a thought leader- and a crowd puller. All these for zero dollars but padaoxically- I am the one who needed 'exposure'. Maybe this isn't common knowledge but speaking gigs come with a huge racial and cultural load. We are constantly thinking about how we keep ourselves racially safe in those events. Most people are strangers & we dont know who the allies are or what level of armour we need to put on to avoid all the resulting microagressions (and subtle put downs) afterwards. So, unless a gig is going to pay me so that I can atleast go to therapy afterwards- the answer will always be no. I encourage people to start refusing invitations to do any cultural or racially loaded work without remuneration. This level of disrespect and devaluation of our collective expertise needs to be boycotted at all levels- and organisations that do this need to be put on notice. Pay people what they are worth. If you don't have the budget to pay people- don't run the event. It's not that hard to be anti-racist.
