  • Loving your child is non-negotiable. That’s what Angie reminds us in our latest episode of Learn with Love supported by funding from The Helmsley Charitable Trust. We see Jubilee reconcile her faith and sexuality while Angie learns that showing unconditional love for her child means taking direct action. She takes action by listening to and reminding LGBTQ+ young people in her community that they are valid just the way they are. Bisexual youth like Jubilee and LGBTQ+ young people, in general, report lower rates of considering suicide when adults like Angie support them. Every day, you have the opportunity to be that one supportive adult in the life of a queer or trans young person. As Angie reminds us, it’s okay to have fear, but together, we can learn with love 🧡 https://lnkd.in/gQnNHXYv

  • No matter where you live, you deserve to feel safe there. This month, our Research Team investigated the mental health and experiences of LGBTQ+ young people in the rural United States. We found that those LGBTQ+ youth living in rural areas reported more negative lived experiences and overall mental health outcomes than those living in non-rural areas. Our findings dig deeper to explore how trans and nonbinary young people are impacted by rurality. LGBTQ+ youth (trans and nonbinary youth in particular) in rural areas reported higher levels of bullying, threats, and victimization, fewer supportive spaces, and a higher likelihood of attempting suicide. At The Trevor Project, our research aims to shed light on the needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ young people nationwide to better understand how we can show up as supportive adults and active allies. Your allyship to rural LGBTQ+ youth is lifesaving — our data proves it. • “It’s okay to have some fears... but it’s also okay to love them and to support them 100%.” In our latest episode of Learn with Love, supported by funding from The Helmsley Charitable Trust, releasing this Thursday, we sit down with Angie and Jubilee, a mother and daughter who share their story of navigating identity, reconciling faith, and learning what it means to treat your family with love and acceptance – no matter what. LGBTQ+ young people are not inherently prone to higher suicide risk because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Rather, they are placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. Stories of acceptance, compassion, and growth make a difference. We’re releasing the full episode of Learn with Love, featuring Angie and Jubilee’s story, on Thursday, March 20, on YouTube. 🧡 If you need support, The Trevor Project is here 24/7/365, free & secure, to help you through anything and everything. • Our 50 State Report provides critical insights into the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ young people in their home states and in their own words 📍Swipe to see our data mapped across the country, showing the impact of both discrimination and acceptance across state lines. While our data shows that queer and trans young people living in specific states have disproportionately considered suicide, we know that those youth are impacted by suicide not because of who they are, but because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized by society. That’s why our research, advocacy, education, and crisis services are centered around creating the circumstances needed for LGBTQ+ young people to thrive. • The Supreme Court will hear a challenge to Colorado’s ban on ‘conversion therapy’ for LGBTQ+ young people. "To be crystal clear: this challenge has nothing to do with free speech, and everything to do with pushing dangerous, debunked practices that have only been proven to cause irreparable harm to LGBTQ+ young people all across the country," said Casey Pick, The Trevor Project's Director of Law and Policy, in a statement to Axios. There is nothing legitimate or therapeutic about changing someone’s identity. ‘Conversion therapy’ is a dangerous, outdated practice, and we won’t tolerate it. • From Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera to Cecilia Gentili and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy to Admiral Rachel Levine and Representative Sarah McBride: trans women have always been at the forefront of change, power, and activism. This International Women’s Day, we honor the legacies and impact of trans women, whose work has paved the way for all women to claim their place in the world. In 1969, when Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera led the Stonewall Uprising, they demanded visibility and equity for all marginalized women. They didn’t just advocate for trans rights — they fought for justice, representation, and safety for all those who experienced oppression and police violence. For decades, trans women have continued their legacy, using their talents and platforms to break barriers and push for a world where all women can thrive. From public protest and grassroots activism to holding public office, these women are powerful examples of both how far we’ve come and how much further we still can go. Everyday, trans women everywhere wake up and live extraordinary lives of courage and power. While their names may not be known or recognized, they are creating a path where everyone can prosper. In remembering and reflecting on the legacies of our trans elders, we are reminded of our collective pride, strength, and dignity. We are empowered by their sacrifices and inspired by their vision of a world where all women are seen, valued, and loved for who they are. We will continue to advocate until that vision is a reality. • This month, The Trevor Project is proud to release our 50 State Report, providing an in-depth analysis of suicide risk amongst LGBTQ+ young people in all 50 states, D.C, and Puerto Rico. With a state-by-state deep dive into the experiences of over 18,000 LGBTQ+ young people, our 50 State Report is an important resource for increasing understanding, humanity, and dignity when discussing suicide risk, access to care, state policies, and anti-LGBTQ+ stigma. At a time when debate about LGBTQ+ identity is prevalent in state legislatures nationwide, our research breaks down the lived experiences of queer and trans youth in their own words. Our 50 State Report maps these realities in a digestible way to equip folks on the ground with data necessary to end the public health crisis facing LGBTQ+ young people. With the backdrop of an increasingly hostile national climate, we know it’s a challenging time to exist as a queer or trans young person in the United States. The stories of our youngest community members, as highlighted in our report, fuel our work at The Trevor Project to create a future that you can thrive in. Whether you live in California, Wisconsin, Maine, Kansas, Florida, Puerto Rico, or anywhere in between, you can find unique data about your state in our 50 State Report. On our website, you can find shareable graphics about your state. Help us spread the word and amplify our research — because data makes a difference.
