Updates

  • Last week, 80 YMCA representatives gathered in Albany for the Stronger Together Annual Meeting. We celebrated the work YMCAs do every day to make children, families, and communities stronger and healthier. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with each other, and to listen to powerful speakers. The 2025 Youth And Government (YAG) Youth Governor, Olivia Phillips, inspired all with a powerful speech about how her experiences in the YAG program have shaped who she is today, and Secretary of State, Hon. Walter Mosley, presented an Executive Chamber Citation on behalf of Governor Kathy Hochul in recognition of the A Better Place Project. In presenting the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley with the Citation, Secretary Mosley said, “The mission of the Y reminds me of our mission at the New York State Department of State: to bring people together, foster community, and create opportunities where there might not be opportunities. This universal message is highlighted in the ‘A Better Place’ multi-media movement and is reflective of our motto at the Department of State, ‘Opportunity Starts Here.’” The Alliance looks forward to future collaborations with the Department of State, and to our continued work on behalf of NYS YMCAs. For more information and the official press release, visit the A Better Place website: https://lnkd.in/gVatpm-J Thank you to all who joined us for an inspirational evening!

  • New York is proud to serve as the birthplace of YMCA Youth and Government, where the program was established in 1936 by Clement A. Duran. The program now offers both middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) model state government assemblies to students and schools across the state. Visit https://lnkd.in/epcEfx-M to learn more about YMCA Youth and Government and how to bring the program to you school district. Thanks for highlighting this program Philip Donnelly.

Executive Director - Rockland County YMCA

As the presidential election approaches, the Rockland YMCA continues its tradition of nurturing young civic leaders through its Youth and Government Club. Each semester more than a dozen high school students participates in this long-standing program. The YMCA Youth and Government program, a nationally recognized initiative since 1936, immerses high school students in state-level government and politics, promoting civic literacy and community engagement. With a legacy of contributing to the passage of over 300 real laws across the nation, the program has a lasting impact on both individuals and communities. It empowers young voices, strengthens civic health, and offers students the opportunity to serve their schools, communities, and states through model government, civic engagement, and service-learning. We love that we're cultivating that spirit year-round in Rockland County as part of YMCA’s national commitment to this club. Thank you to all the local elected officials who support our youth’s efforts and interest in government.

  • 🛑 Did you know? Falls are the leading cause of injury among older Americans—yet falling is NOT a natural part of aging. 🚫   💡 As Falls Prevention Awareness Week kicks off today, we are shining a spotlight on the importance of preventing falls and empowering older adults to live confidently without the fear of falling. ❗ Thanks to a four-year, $600,000 federal grant awarded to the New York State YMCA Foundation from the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL), Ys will be expanding our YMCA programs, launching innovative in-person and virtual fall prevention initiatives, and working with diverse community partners to reach more seniors and adults with disabilities.   This grant isn’t just about reducing falls—it’s about enhancing independence, building strength, and supporting the overall well-being of our communities.   💪✨Let’s work together to make every step a safer one! #FallsPreventionAwarenessWeek #HealthyAging
