America the Beautiful for All Coalition reposted this
Conservation Program Manager at National Caucus of Environmental Legislators | Co-Chair, America the Beautiful for All Coalition's Priorities, Projects & Campaigns Work Group
One time, in college, I got the chance to go ice climbing in the middle of winter in New Hampshire, and I experienced a phenomenon that is apparently called the "screaming barfies." In ice climbing, you spend 30-45 minutes with your hands above your head in freezing temperatures holding two ice tools. When you get to the top and rappel down, you bring your hands back below your head, and the blood rushes back into your cold arms. This causes your body to get punched by cocktail of sensations, most prominently - wanting to scream, throw up, and cry all at once. Sound familiar? (haha 😳 ) If you, like me, are feeling anything close to the screaming barfies with yesterday's news, first, I hope you take lots of rest and care. Second - I hope you will join the America the Beautiful for All Coalition on November 12 at 12pm ET for a post-election processing and planning discussion. We will provide a safe space to reflect on the election results, share experiences, and explore strategies for supporting those who may be disproportionately affected by political shifts. We will also discuss laying the groundwork for organizing in collective power to continue our work of conserving land, water, wildlife and addressing historical and contemporary environmental injustices. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, particularly the Taíno community, for grounding the ATB4All coalition and its members in Puerto Rico. On Day 1 of the New Era, New Leaders Conference, kicked off with a captivating Taíno areíto ceremony, led by a bohique (spiritual leader). The ceremony honored Taíno deities and invoked blessings from Yocahú, the supreme creator. The ceremony featured the rhythmic sounds of traditional instruments, culminating in a symbolic gesture of commitment to environmental stewardship. Thank you Warukuma, Amanax’ri, Nanakawei (Nana), Abey, and Juan Torres for connecting participants with Puerto Rico’s rich cultural heritage and legacy of its Indigenous peoples through your taiaruti (excelente / excellent) ceremony!!!
