We bring researchers and donors together to cure brain diseases and disorders.

About us

Since 1992, the American Brain Foundation has been investing in research to end the battle against brain diseases and disorders. We are a national foundation in relentless pursuit to identify causes, improve treatments, and discover cures. We unite donors and researchers to impact patient lives and those around them. We invest in research of the whole brain and all nervous system disorders knowing they are interconnected. This holistic, innovative approach allows us to build bridges between diseases and break new ground in research and application. Believing in a whole-brain approach gives us an edge in understanding and combating brain disease. We understand that when we cure one of them, we will cure many. Learn more by visiting www.AmericanBrainFoundation.org. Mission: The American Brain Foundation brings researchers and donors together to cure brain diseases and disorders. • Meet Dr. Malya Sahu, one of our 2024 Next Generation Research Grant recipients! Dr. Sahu is investigating the prevalence and diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Zambia, where studies suggest MS is underdiagnosed and undertreated. She aims to design interventions that reflect Zambia’s cultural, socioeconomic, and healthcare system differences. Learn more about other research we’re currently funding: https://lnkd.in/ginjXeRX

  • When people have autoimmune brain diseases like multiple sclerosis, their immune systems mistake healthy brain cells for invaders. Because it’s the immune system’s job to defend against harmful substances, it attacks the so-called invaders, causing inflammation in the brain (or neuroinflammation). Neuroinflammation can impair cognitive function and contribute to other brain diseases and disorders. • A new study revealed that brain inflammation can really mess with your muscles! Here’s what researchers found: When the brain gets inflamed from conditions like Alzheimer’s or long COVID, it sends a protein to your muscles that activates a pathway called JAK-STAT. This disrupts muscle function, causing fatigue and weakness. Researchers are optimistic that this process can be blocked by targeting the JAK-STAT pathway with existing treatments. Swipe to learn more about this study!

  • Please join us in welcoming Matthew Picard to our Board of Directors! Matt has already partnered with the American Brain Foundation to launch the Picard Research Fund and the Heads Together Gala, raising critical funds for TBI, ALS, and glioblastoma research. We’re thrilled to have him on board and can’t wait to see the further impact he’ll have on our mission to cure brain disease.

  • Our community is so creative when it comes to sharing their stories surrounding brain disease! Alex wrote and directed a short film about processing grief to cope with the loss of his dad to a rare brain disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. His film “Farewell Fire” beautifully captures a son’s path to accepting his father’s death through memory and reflection against a natural backdrop.
