➡️ Administrators probably recognize that with 20% to 30% of hospitalizations being observation, saving one to two inpatient unit bed days per case could dramatically change the flow in the hospital and in the emergency department. Short-stay units provide a less congested environment, allowing for individualized attention and quicker decision-making. Moreover, some research indicates that observation units can lead to better clinical outcomes than inpatient units. For instance, patients in one short-stay unit experienced fewer adverse events compared to those admitted to inpatient units. And at the end of the day, fewer days in the hospital reduces risks for hospital-acquired conditions. For both UChicago Medicine and Piedmont, the era of nose-in-keyboard provider stenography gave way to AI-generated appointment notes. In all three cases, these health systems worked to engage providers in high-impact clinical technology decision-making processes, marrying their subject matter knowledge and experience as end users with the technical-heavy assessments and highly detailed systems requirements that information technology professionals are best equipped to handle. 💻 Almost nothing strikes more fear in the heart of a hospital or health system CEO than protecting patient data from the threat of a cyberattack. During the past five years, there has been a 256% increase in large breaches reported to the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights involving hacking and a 264% increase in ransomware, according to the federal office that enforces HIPAA security and breach notification rules. Ransomware and hacking are the primary cyberthreats in healthcare, according to the OCR. What’s at stake first and foremost is being able to deliver care, as healthcare leaders scramble to protect patients, sometimes having to divert care to other hospitals.
