AFAR is pleased to announce Jeremy D. Walston, MD, of Johns Hopkins Medicine as the recipient of our 2024 Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction. Named after AFAR's founder, this award recognizes exceptional contributions to basic or clinical research in the field of aging. Dr. Walston’s research, which bridges clinical and basic science, is centered on frailty, resilience, and the interface of mitochondrial biology with chronic inflammation and age-related changes. His physical frailty measurement tool has become a gold standard in thousands of studies and is increasingly applied in clinical practice to improve risk assessment and care planning for older adults. Learn more about Dr. Walston’s research and this distinguished award here: https://ow.ly/uNJM50TZG4M In a ceremony organized by AFAR, Dr. Walston will receive his award and present a lecture on his research at the 2024 Annual GSA Meeting on November 14 at 6:30 pm PT. AFAR is pleased to announce Megan Huisingh-Scheetz, MD, MPH, AGSF, of The University of Chicago as the recipient of our 2024 Terrie Fox Wetle Rising Star Award in Health Services and Aging Research. Named after former AFAR board president and current board member Terrie Fox Wetle, PhD, who has devoted her career to improving the lives of older people, this award honors early or mid-phase career health service researchers who have made important contributions with multidisciplinary work poised to impact the field for years to come. Dr. Huisingh-Scheetz uses her background in Geriatrics and Epidemiology to focus her career on the translation and advancement of frailty science. In addition to publishing on the challenges of frailty implementation, she is advancing frailty research by using wearable accelerometers to analyze movements related to frailty and aging biomarkers. Dr. Huisingh-Scheetz is also exploring the effectiveness of consumer-grade voice-activated virtual assistants to deliver exercise programs and socialization support, aiming to improve physical and social functioning in older adults. Her work focuses on engaging older patients and caregivers, particularly in underserved communities.
