About us
The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), headquartered in Chicago, is a non-partisan, not-for-profit technical institute and trade association established in 1921 to serve the structural steel design community and construction industry in the United States. AISC’s mission is to make structural steel the material of choice by being the leader in structural-steel-related technical and market-building activities, including: specification and code development, research, education, technical assistance, quality certification, standardization, market development, and advocacy. AISC has a long tradition of service to the steel construction industry providing timely and reliable information. As part of AISC's mission, we emphasize: --Increasing the structural steel industry's share of the construction market --Unifying the industry with a common purpose --Increasing the structural steel industry’s share of the construction market --Supporting and improving the ability of the structural steel industry to be both innovative and competitive in a worldwide construction market Since its establishment, AISC has conducted its numerous activities with a scrupulous sense of public responsibility. For this reason, and because of the high caliber of its staff, the Institute enjoys a close working relationship with architects, engineers, code officials and educators who recognize its professional status in the fields of specification writing, structural research, design development and performance standards. AISC represents the total experience, judgment, and strength of the entire domestic industry of steel fabricators, distributors, and producers. The scope and success of its activities could not be achieved by any one member of the industry. The nation shares the rewards of these activities – through better, safer and more economical buildings, bridges and other structures framed in structural steel. Smarter. Stronger. Steel.

Throughout October, shops, training centers, and firms in every corner of the country rolled out their welcome mats in honor of SteelDays! These events--including facility tours, hands-on ironworker training, welding competitions, and more--showcase the vibrant American structural steel industry. Thanks to all who hosted events and celebrated SteelDays with us! Get a closer look at a SteelDays event with our puzzle of the week at aisc.org/puzzles! Members from the Structural Engineers Association of North Carolina visited the site of a new steel-framed 12-story bed tower on the Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center’s campus in Charlotte, N.C. The project, scheduled to open in 2027, is framed with 10,500 tons of structural steel and includes nearly 900 SidePlate joints.

Following a brief stint in the field of linguistics early in her career, Heather Gilmer, PE found her way back to her original engineering passion: bridges. Combining the two fields has led the leading civil engineer to 20-plus years in fabrication quality management and specification writing--contributions that earned her an AISC Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year! Find out about Gilmer’s unique path to the steel bridge industry, some of the most notable projects she has worked on, and the mentors who have guided her career in this month’s episode of the Field Notes podcast! Listen to the full interview at aisc.org/fieldnotes, or read an excerpt at aisc.org/gilmer.

Last week, Gerdau and AISC hosted a mill tour and steel school for a group of Atlanta architects and engineers! Participants got an up-close look at steel production, learning about the process from raw materials to the finished product. The tour also highlighted what makes today’s structural steel industry sustainable, showing how recycled materials and energy-efficient practices play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of steel production. We enjoyed giving these architects an inside look at steel’s importance in construction, manufacturing, and sustainability! Interested in touring a mill yourself? Reach out to AISC’s Hope Hrabowy (hrabowy@aisc.org) for more information on future tours and how you can get involved! Gerdau North America AIA Atlanta

AISC stands with the call of Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) to expand the scope of the Section 232 steel tariff program. They are urging the Biden administration to close loopholes in the Section 232 steel tariff program that is designed to ensure a level playing field for America’s structural steel production and fabrication industries. These loopholes currently allow foreign producers to import downstream products--including fabricated structural steel--without tariffs. Ensuring a fair and competitive market for U.S. steel translates to increased production capacity--and it protects American jobs and the families and communities that rely on them. Read more at aisc.org/section-232.
