Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
Civil Engineering
Civil engineers shaping the world. Representing more than 97,000 members worldwide.
About us
Our mission is to put civil engineers "at the heart of society". We are a qualifying body, a centre for the exchange of knowledge and a provider of resources to encourage innovation and excellence in the profession worldwide. Our 97,000 members help to create the structures and systems that sustain society. They are responsible for designing, building, maintaining and improving bridges, roads, canals, docks, office buildings, hospitals, schools, airports, power stations, railways, flood defences, water-treatment facilities... everywhere. We make sure that the high standards needed to become a professional civil engineer are met. Professionals who are awarded membership of our Institution are among the best in the world. In the UK, we talk to national, devolved and local government and to the media. Our experts give informed comments to journalists, politicians and the public. We let politicians know what our members think. We give our opinion to government in writing and in person, and encourage our members to comment on consultation documents.

For many, a bridge is something we use to get from a to b. But to the people of Eswatini, it means more. To the local teacher who was nearly swept away by the river, it’s a lifesaver. To a group of teenagers, it inspired dreams of becoming an engineer. Tim Ashworth, who visited the country after receiving a QUEST travel award, said: “It was clear that it brought the community closer to the world, and they had a renewed sense of their hopes and dreams because of this.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/dYzQdqwf

When Sir Joseph Bazalgette created London’s first sewers, it was designed for a population of four million people. In the 140 years since, the population has more than doubled. Introducing the Thames Tideway Tunnel, which aims to make the river cleaner for both people and wildlife. Nicknamed the super sewer, it is now fully connected, and increases the city’s capability to deal with wastewater. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dgRebzW5 📸 Photo credit: Tideway London

Safety is a full-time job – don’t make it a part-time practice. That's a top tip that Colin Buckle makes sure his apprentices know from day one. Elijah Twiss, a fourth-year apprentice, finds that the way to do this is to ask questions, no matter how big or small. What safety advice you would give yourself at the start of your career?🧐 Let us know in the comments👇 Arcadis

When Talha Wadud was told that "apprenticeships are for dropouts", he was determined to prove it wrong - and at just 16, he did. Rejection letters and pressure from his family made full-time education look more tempting. Thanks to his persistence, he’s a civil engineering degree apprentice at Tony Gee and Partners, gaining hands-on learning and practical experience. Now he’s using his passion to inspire the next generation by attending school career events and assisting with work experience. Celebrate National Apprenticeship Week by reading Tahla's story. The condition of critical infrastructure in the UK has engineers fearing for our safety. Our State of the Nation 2025 report reviews the main issues facing the industry and the engineering solutions to them. “Now is the time to establish a clear vision of how infrastructure can contribute to a better future for all of us,” says ICE President Professor Jim Hall.
