We'll be hosting a screening of the film "Bring Them Home/Aiskótáhkapiyaaya" at the National Discovery Center in Lewistown on Tuesday, October 29th at 7 p.m. This award-winning and critically acclaimed film documents the return of the bison (or "iinnii") to Blackfeet ancestral lands. This event is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a panel discussion with the film's co-directors. Hope to see you there! https://lnkd.in/gh5e-7iM

American Prairie is working to connect, conserve, and share more than 3 million acres of prairie grassland in Montana's
About us
Working in Montana’s Northern Great Plains, American Prairie is creating the largest nature reserve in the contiguous United States. Already underway, when complete the Reserve will connect a rare grassland landscape of public and private spaces one and a half times larger than Yellowstone National Park — teeming with an amazing diversity and abundance of native wildlife. American Prairie Reserve is funded exclusively by private individuals and foundations. We engage in science and education projects, provide public access and help expand economic opportunities for local communities. National Geographic describes our work as “one of the most ambitious conservation efforts in American history.”

Congratulations to the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute team and their Aaniiih and Nakoda partners in the Fort Belknap community - what an incredible project and gift to the region. We're glad to see swift fox return to their place on the prairie!
Research Ecologist, Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute | Rewilding | Restoration | Conservation
Last week marked the final swift fox translocation to the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in Montana—an incredible milestone in our six-year journey to re-establish a thriving population in the region. The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute has been committed to this goal, starting with a comprehensive feasibility assessment of habitat suitability, securing buy-in from local communities, and collaborating with key stakeholders. Last Tuesday, we released the last 17 foxes, completing the translocation of 138 swift foxes over five years. The foxes are settling in, breeding, and showing strong signs of success. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of dozens of people and organizations. Special thanks to Wyoming and Colorado and their respective wildlife agencies for contributing foxes from their healthy populations and for support from their staff. In addition, a heartfelt gratitude to the Calgary Zoo, Smithsonian Women's Committee, Regina Bauer Frankenberg Foundation, Defenders of Wildlife, American Prairie, John and Adrienne Mars, the Volgenau Foundation, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and many others for their financial backing. As we embark on the next phase of the project—monitoring the new population to ensure continued growth and success—we are actively fundraising for the next five years. If you are interested in learning more about the reintroduction of #swifties, please reach out. Let’s continue restoring swift foxes across the Great Plains! #Conservation #SwiftFox #GreatPlainsRestoration #Wildlife photo by Maya Rayle, Smithsonian Research Fellow.
