Our 2023 Society of the Cincinnati Book Prize winner, Dr. Friederike Baer, recently presented her research on Hessians at the VCU Department of History. Dr. Baer conducted research in the Institute's library for her book, Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War, during her 2011 Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati Research Fellowship. Many thanks to the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia for sponsoring this event and presentations at universities throughout Virginia each year.

The application period for library fellowships is open, these opportunities encourage the advanced study of and publication on the importance and legacy of the American Revolution. Fellows receive support to explore our library and museum collections related to their projects. The new Thomas Jay McCahill III Fellowship provides financial support for a one-year period for one or more scholars to undertake advanced research on a topic germane to American history in the colonial and revolutionary periods. We are pleased to announce the new Thomas Jay McCahill III Fellowship for the American Revolution Institute library. This new annual fellowship opportunity will commence with the 2025-2026 academic year, perfectly timed to honor the 250th anniversaries of the American Revolution in 2025 and the Declaration of Independence in 2026. The McCahill Fellowship will provide up to $75,000 for a one-year period to support one or more scholars while they undertake advanced research on a topic germane to American history in the colonial and revolutionary periods. The McCahill Fellowship is open to graduate students as well as advanced and independent scholars who are conducting research projects related to an issue of the revolutionary period, with an emphasis on British America and its colonial territories, or the early American republic. The ARI supports scholarship and new research through its fellowship program. This new opportunity highlights the ARI’s collection of rare books, manuscripts, documents, and maps, while also reinforcing its commitment to excellence in advancing the study of the American Revolution’s legacy and meaning. Join us for the 2024 Society of the Cincinnati Prize Presentation & Reception. This event will be held at Anderson House on Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 6:00-8:30 P.M.   The 2024 Society of the Cincinnati Prize honors Eli Merritt, M.D., M.A., for his book Disunion Among Ourselves: A Political History of the American Revolution (University of Missouri Press, 2023), which explores the politics of the Continental Congress during the American Revolution. In this special event, Dr. Merritt, will receive the 2024 Society of the Cincinnati Prize and draw from his book to discuss the deep political divisions that almost tore the Union apart during the Revolution. Dr. Merritt's lecture will be followed by a reception. The Society of the Cincinnati Prize was established in 1989 to recognize authors of outstanding books that advance our understanding of the American Revolution and its legacy. https://lnkd.in/e7Ma7PSG

The Institute and its headquarters, Anderson House, were recently the subject of a radio and social media story by WTOP News’ Matt Kaufax, on his “Matt About Town” series of important local cultural institutions. His tour included our current exhibition, Fete Lafayette, and a visit to our 50,000-item collection in the ARI research library, which gave him a new appreciation of the American Revolution. The museum is open, for tours of Anderson House and to view our current exhibition, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.
