Over the past year, ASTC has been working closely with the Texas Chapter of The American Board of Trial Advocates (TEX-ABOTA) to help consult and recruit for its 3rd annual Best in Texas Voir Dire Competition, where teams of 2-3 students from the 10 ABA-accredited law schools in Texas competed to select a jury and deliver a closing argument. ASTC provided the competitors with resources on jury selection, including articles and books that they have written, and a four-part masterclass series of videos on how to effectively conduct voir dire: Voir Dire Goals & Philosophy, Voir Dire Strategy, Creating a Juror Profile, and Communication Skills & Presence in the Courtroom. Finally, 24 consultants paired up with the law students and their coaches to provide advice in individual team sessions. Additionally, ASTC recruited and sat over 450 mock jurors. ASTC President Faye Honig was on the ground coordinating jurors. The competition was held in Houston, TX at the Harris County Civil Courthouse on September 13-15. Congratulations to the winning team, Baylor University School of Law! (and their ASTC consultants, Daniel Wolfe, J.D., Ph.D. and Kelley Tobin) A big congratulations as well to the BIT Chair Donald Kidd and the whole Committee for putting on a seamless competition. ASTC extends a huge thank you to TEX-ABOTA for including us in this prestigious competition and to all of our ASTC volunteers for sharing your time, talent, and resources! We look forward to participating again in next year’s competition in Lubbock, TX.
