NEW: A new book brings together four Chilean former presidents from across the ideological spectrum: Eduardo Frei, Ricardo Lagos, Michelle Bachelet, and Sebastián Piñera. It's like an oasis in a desert of polarization, writes Brian Winter. https://lnkd.in/eum5FZRC

NEW: Soybean growing has transformed South America over the past 50 years, and new technology may herald an even brighter future. But environmental criticism and questions about foreign demand lead some to wonder—is the era of heady expansion over? Nick Burns visited a soy farm in Brazil's Piauí state to find out. #soy #agriculture #commodities #brazil #agribusiness https://lnkd.in/dKvA_4VW

No other issue is more pressing for Mexicans than public security—a critical challenge facing President Claudia Sheinbaum, who is being inaugurated today. To fight organized criminal violence, two strategies are frequently discussed, writes Sarah Zukerman Daly. The first is a punitive, militarized approach, known as “tough on crime” or “mano dura,” with some variations and consequences. A second option focuses on prevention, a soft-on-crime platform that addresses social and economic drivers. But the start of a new presidential term offers Sheinbaum an opportunity to consider and test a third option that breaks away from this unsatisfying dichotomy. #mexico #security #organizedcrime #mexicous https://lnkd.in/eAq39DCK
Why Sheinbaum May Take a Different Path on Mexico’s Security

NEW: Colombia has come a long way since the late nineties, writes Steven Hendrix. Today’s Colombia has both institutional will and capacity—and based on this track record, policymakers in Bogotá and Washington might be tempted to continue on the same path as they consider the future of the U.S.-Colombia relationship. But they would be wrong. The old Plan Colombia formula no longer works, Hendrix writes. To build on what’s been accomplished and prevent retrenchment, a new, holistic approach is needed. #uscolombia #colombia #plancolombia #petro https://lnkd.in/gp3npvt5

NEW: Claudia Sheinbaum will try to govern as a “techno-populist,” writes Vanessa Rubio Márquez. Whereas AMLO pushed more state and less market, Sheinbaum is likely to push more of both. This is not as contradictory as it may initially seem. "This hybrid style of governing will attempt to maintain the popular social programs and jingoistic postures that characterized AMLO’s government," Rubio writes, "But to fund continued spending on welfare and infrastructure, Sheinbaum will diverge from AMLO’s handling of the economy, betting on a renewed relationship with the private sector to boost growth." https://lnkd.in/eArtcSPc
