Our AmeriCorps members with Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management are making sure no community is left behind in the aftermath of #HurricaneHelene. I-DIEM's Equity Response Team mobilized in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to support equitable response and recovery efforts for under-resourced, and marginalized communities impacted by the storm. From developing resources, providing equity and vulnerability assessments to logistics and communications, our members are ensuring underserved areas receive the resources they need. I-DIEM works with diverse communities post-disaster to identify inequities, re-direct key resources, build sustainable relationships, and reduce the timeframe for recovery. Breaking Climate News! 📢 AmeriCorps VISTA and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have joined forces to create the Environmental Justice Climate Corps! This new partnership will engage hundreds of young Americans in helping communities across the country develop and carry out pollution reduction and climate resilience projects as they gain skills and experience for good paying clean energy and climate careers. This new program is a part of the American Climate Corps and is the largest environmental partnership in AmeriCorps’ history and EPA’s first nationwide service effort. The Environmental Justice Climate Corps will engage more than 250 members in VISTA over the next three years in full-time, yearlong service terms supporting EPA’s goals to cut pollution, create jobs, and lower energy costs. Members will serve across the country, helping organizations in disadvantaged and other low-income communities access federal resources to carry out locally driven projects to reduce pollution, increase community climate resilience, improve public health and safety, and build community capacity to address environmental justice and climate challenges. Acting Director Maggie Garvey celebrates the success of the AmeriCorps VISTA Food Security Initiative: Olympics season has ended. I hope that you enjoyed watching the top athletes from around the world compete to be recognized as the best in their respective sports. My family certainly did – our eyes were glued to the games, particularly the swimming and gymnastics competitions. Watching the games reminded me that while only a few of us are or will be Olympians, I believe that – wherever we are placed – we can bring the best of our talents, skills, and experiences to the table. We all win when each of us has the opportunity to be our best. On that note, I am honored to highlight the VISTA program's Food Security Initiative, an effort that has excelled in teamwork across the agency, sponsor and community collaboration, and its ability to increase food security across six US states and one US territory. The initiative began in 2020 as a rapid response to the increase of hunger caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As we bring the initiative to a close, I am excited to share the accomplishments that exemplify the four years of work and service from our sponsors and members. I would, especially, like to highlight Program Specialist Orláith Duggan. Her leadership and passion helped guide the initiative and its sponsors and members to successes that will continue to echo in communities for years to come.
