Offshore wind costs are rising while other renewable electricity costs are stabilizing or decreasing post-2022-23 supply chain crisis. As of early 2024, wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) costs have decreased by 2% and 5%, respectively, but remain 10% higher than pre-crisis levels. Offshore wind, however, is up by 1%. The main issue is a lack of standardization. Offshore wind turbines are not mass-produced like solar panels, which benefit from economies of scale. Offshore wind's unique challenges, such as transporting and maintaining turbines, require specialized equipment and infrastructure. This makes cost reduction tough. Big turbines offer efficiency but require larger, customized components, preventing standardization. Investment costs for offshore wind fell to $3,150/kW in 2021-22 but have since risen to $3,475/kW, still higher than 2021 levels. Meanwhile, PV and onshore wind have seen cost decreases from recent peaks but remain above their lowest levels. #amicatalent #windenergy #solarenergy #renewableenergy

Over 500 GW of wind capacity in countries like Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the UK is waiting for grid connection. A recent report reveals that the total standby capacity across Europe is even higher, underscoring significant grid access challenges and proposing solutions to unlock capacity for new and upgraded wind farms. Grid access has become the primary barrier to expanding renewables. The issue extends beyond grid saturation and poor planning to include inefficient permitting processes. Curtailment, where wind farms can't export their output due to grid congestion, is also a major concern. Transparency on curtailed renewable energy and congestion costs is lacking across Europe. This grid congestion is blocking hundreds of gigawatts of wind power, reducing energy security and driving up prices. While some reforms, like improved planning, will take time, others, such as better grid connection management, can be implemented immediately. To understand grid permitting and curtailment practices across Europe, a survey was conducted in October 2023, gathering insights from national stakeholders. The report highlights key areas for improvement: 🌐 Efficiently planning transmission and distribution grids for future demand and renewable capacity over the next 10 years. 🌐 Moving away from the first-come, first-served approach to grid access. 🌐 Accelerating the implementation of EU legislation like the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and the EU Emergency Permitting Regulation. 🌐 Establishing transparent, harmonized rules for congestion management, curtailment compensation, and flexible grid connection agreements. 🌐 Ensuring a fair distribution of grid expansion costs between developers and system operators. 🌐 Creating grid connection rules for co-located renewables, with or without storage, and suitable revenue stabilization schemes. #cleanenergy #renewableenergy #solarpower #greenenergy #sustainability #gogreen #windenergy #climateaction

The US remains at the center of the global energy storage industry, with California having surpassed 7GW of grid-scale energy storage installations, ERCOT going from strength to strength, and new markets across the country opening up. Planned and currently operational U.S. utility-scale battery capacity totaled over 16 GW at the end of 2023, with another 15 GW in 2024 and around 9 GW now expected in 2025. Energy storage is no longer an aside or a luxury; it is a necessity if we want to reach our global net-zero goals and stay on track. Since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, over 540 GWs of storage has requested interconnection. It's crucial to assess how developers have adjusted to this post-IRA landscape, how the industry has adapted to these new market conditions, and how market players are striving to overcome any teething problems stemming from rapid deployment in this increasingly competitive industry. Key topics will include forecasting and analyzing emerging US markets, financial structures and revenue strategies, asset optimization, and the nuances of developing storage in a post-IRA world. We are also excited to put a huge focus on networking at the event in 2025, with the launch of new and improved networking sessions, such as interactive roundtables, exclusive networking events, workshops, and technical 101 sessions. The event will provide the perfect platform to connect key industry players across the entire value chain of this buzzing US market. Hosted in Texas, a renewable and business hub, as well as the driving force behind many energy storage installations in the US this year, the Summit is the perfect place to meet with fellow industry players and address the most critical market issues. This summit is the only place where you are guaranteed to meet all the most important investors, developers, IPPs, RTOs and ISOs, policymakers, utilities, energy buyers, service providers, consultancies, and technology providers in one room. Join us in March to ensure that your deals get done as efficiently as possible.
