Nuance is hard. Causality is even harder. Beware sales pitches that promise dramatic changes in fundraising results from urging donors to give through different channels. Sure, a donor who gives in multiple channels is more likely to donate again or to give a larger amount. But is this because something magical happens when a mail donor decides to donate online with a credit card? Or is it more likely that such an action is simply *correlated* with a higher level of dedication to your cause and a higher level of attention to your various communication pieces? At many organizations I would bet that being both a volunteer and a donor correlates with more sustained giving. So we could imagine a big campaign framed around trying to get all donors to also become volunteers. No doubt it would work with some! But it would also not work with others: those who live too far away, are not mobile enough to work on site, or who are simply too busy with work or family duties. And the energy and expense that went into that campaign might have produced more fruit if you had simply asked donors directly for the end result you really wanted: renewed and increased gifts.

AmPhil’s Denver office hosted an evening of celebration for the excellent work of our local nonprofit leaders, and boy are we glad we did! Thank you to everyone who came out for making it such a wonderful event. It’s hard to beat great conversation with great people, especially with a backdrop of the Rockies at sunset. Let’s do this again sometime! #nonprofit #fundraising #local #celebration

Complete the syllogism: --> To raise money, especially major gifts, one must build deep and strong relationships. --> To build deep and strong relationships, one must retain and train people whose job it is to do so. --> Therefore, to raise money . . . [insert your answer here] One of my friends--now the head of a large foundation, but formerly the head of a human-services nonprofit, where he spurred truly impressive growth--is fond of pointing out, as an example, that the University of Michigan development staff exceeds 500 people. Not coincidentally, the U of M raises a lot of money. Your investments determine your return. #majorgifts #fundraising

We are excited to introduce Scott Bucko, our talented Senior Managing Consultant at AmPhil! With over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, Scott brings a wealth of expertise and passion to our team. Scott has successfully spearheaded major campaigns at UPenn, Drexel, and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. His diverse experience in education, real estate, and owning a bookstore brings a unique perspective to nonprofit strategy and fundraising. Q: What inspired you to start working with nonprofits? A: I’ve always been inspired by the idea of meeting needs where you see them and the concept of subsidiarity, the fancy term for addressing needs through the most local level of human community. This is what nonprofits and charities do in countless ways – from food pantries to arts groups, and schools to hospitals. I’m drawn to meeting fundamental human needs, and I believe strong, well-funded nonprofits are a primary means for doing that. Q: What’s your favorite success story that you’ve been a part of? A: There are many, but the one that comes to mind is helping a nearly 900-year-old monastic community introduce themselves to potential partners. Seeing new people inspired to step up with generosity was deeply rewarding. This visionary religious group is executing one of the most unique building projects in the world. I think of all the people like me who have helped their forebears over the centuries – I’m playing my little role just as they did. Q: Favorite aspect of company culture? A: That we know who we are as a company. We understand the values that shape the way we serve our clients. I appreciate that I work for a company that has taken the time to articulate its mission, core values, and character traits. Q: What are some good books or articles that you’ve read recently? A: I recently read “Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen” by Donald Miller. At AmPhil, we’re big on helping our clients build meaningful relationships with donors and this book was helpful in that regard. Donors are people with aspirations, needs, and goals. Mission-driven organizations need to extend an invitation to people where those things can be meaningfully met. #employee #employeeappreciation #nonprofit #consulting #companyculture #team #leadership
