Updates

  • We recently presented Officer Korell with both his 20-year pin and his retirement badge. Gordon joined our blue family in February 2004. He worked Patrol until May 2016 when he transferred to CAP (Community Action Policing) where he has been ever since. As the longest-serving member currently in that unit, Officer Korell has a lot of knowledge that the rest of the team relied on. Having to work without him is going to be a bit of a learning curve. Gordon has always been even-keeled. He never turned down anyone’s request for help and he never made you feel like you were bothering or interrupting him. When CAP was originally created, it was informally known as the “problem of the day” unit. Whatever the hot button issue of the moment was, CAP was thrown at it to address it. Officer Korell was a big part of helping other CAP members adapt to such a fluid work environment. His wisdom will be missed. Good luck to you, Sir. Your time here has been most appreciated. You’ve earned every happy thing that will surely come your way in the next chapter of your life. Congratulations!

  • We’ve had him for ten whole years! One decade down….. two to go? Maybe? Please?   Congratulations to Detective Perez for his ten years of service with the Anchorage Police Department. He is an integral part of our Crimes Against Children Unit which is one of the tougher assignments in the department. Some days one really must dig deep to work those cases. We are grateful Detective Perez has chosen to do so. He has a big heart and is dedicated to helping victimized children. His work makes a difference.

  • Many employees at APD have a certain thing that just bugs them the most. For Financial Crimes Detective Loughman, that thing is when crimes are committed against the elderly. In addition to her regular caseload, Detective Loughman is known for seeking out fraud cases committed against some of our most vulnerable citizens.     A pair of women got hold of a stolen notary stamp, created fictitious Power of Attorney documents, and then proceeded to drain the bank accounts containing life savings. This type of event would be catastrophic for most people, but especially for those who are in the golden years of their lives. Detective Loughman recovered the stolen notary stamp and ultimately held the perpetrators accountable for their criminal actions.    In another case, a deceased person’s funds were stolen. Detective Loughman successfully recovered the money and returned it to the owner’s estate.   Person crimes tend to get a lot of attention, and for good reason. But property crimes affect a greater percentage of us and can be devastating. Detective Loughman’s determination to solve these crimes is often a lifeline for those who were victimized. Her efforts are appreciated and felt by so many.   For all these reasons, and so many more, Detective Loughman was awarded the Chief’s Letter of Recognition. Congratulations, Detective! 🎉

  • Congratulations to Detective Karstetter who was recognized as Detective of the Second Rotation of 2023. He currently serves as a Burglary Detective in the Property Crimes Division. Due to his investigative tenacity, Detective Karstetter closed 23 cases involving the crimes of burglary, theft, and fraud all committed by the same two suspects. As a result of his work, each defendant was charged with 84 criminal offenses. Outstanding. Putting bad guys in jail is one of the top functions of a law enforcement agency. Detective Karstetter continues to play a large part in that effort. Our community is better off for it. Congratulations to you, Sir! 🎉

  • Congratulations to Robbery Detective Ruble! We are recognizing his 15 years of service with APD. Maybe we can convince him that he’s only reached the half-way point in his career so we can keep him for another one and a half decades. Doesn’t hurt to ask. Congratulations, Sir! 🎉

  • Congratulations are in order for Mike Swanson who was recognized as Non-sworn of the Second Rotation of 2023 (yeah – we are a teensy little bit behind the curve ball on this one). Mike is a Cyber Crimes Technician which is a fancy way of saying the man has skills. He can extract data from electronic devices that often proves critical in the solving of crimes. Due to information he recently uncovered, detectives were able to provide much needed answers to a family consumed with grief over the death of a loved one. Mike has proved time and time again that he is always willing to help in any way he can. He is not one of those information hoarders. Instead, he shares his knowledge with any of his coworkers who are willing to take it with the idea that two heads are better than one. He is a true team player and a valuable asset to our department and community. We are glad you are here, Mike. Congratulations! 🎉
