About us
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is a charitable 501c3 organization caring for nearly 5,000 animals each year to help them find second chances in a new home or to help reunite them with their grateful owners. For more than 65 years, we’ve worked tirelessly to care for the sick, treat the injured, comfort the unwanted and protect the abused. Whether helping people in need keep their pets through surrender prevention programs, offering low-cost veterinary services and clinics, as well as outreach and education events throughout the county, our work goes far beyond the walls of the shelter. We are open weekdays from 1-7 and from 12-5 on the weekends.

This past weekend, we celebrated a significant milestone with a ceremony for our newly opened Schwegmann Healing Center. In the past, as a high-admission shelter, our shelter faced significant euthanasia to ensure enough space to continue helping more animals. After adopting our no-kill initiative in 2018, this crematorium space quickly lost its necessity. With the shelter's need for a proper isolation space to care for sick animals, transforming our former crematorium represents a pivotal moment in our history. A space that was once the last step for many animals is now the opposite and a fresh beginning for many more. We’re so excited about the positive impact this space will now have and look forward to the many animals we can now support and heal. ❤️

Join us in celebrating one month of our Dog's Day Out Program! Our team launched this program at the end of June as an initiative designed to benefit both our shelter dogs and the community by offering our dogs a much-needed break from the shelter environment. Those interested can stop in the shelter during our adoption hours any day and take one of our dogs on a variety of trips out of their kennel. Since our launch, we’ve had nearly 50 trips, giving 35 dogs a well-deserved break from the shelter. Excitingly, 2 of these dogs were adopted by their Dog’s Day Out Chaperones, and 14 more have found homes since! On average, our dogs are being adopted just 3½ days after their day out. The feedback and observations during the outings have helped our team learn more about the dog's behavior, preferences, and needs, which can assist in finding them a more suitable future home. Dogs participating in the program have received more exposure to potential adopters while on their outings and from the shared photos. The amazing photos and heartwarming stories we’ve received highlight the incredible impact of this program. We are so thankful to our community for this support—here’s to many more successful days ahead!
