On August 7th, we had the pleasure of hosting a Dermatology CE event focused on the misuse of antihistamines in atopic dermatitis. A huge THANK YOU to Dr. McClintock, ASC’s Dermatologist, for leading this fantastic event, and to our sponsor, Hill's Pet Nutrition. We also appreciate all the veterinarians who joined us. It was a day packed with learning, networking, and fun!

Introducing our newest team member, Dr. Carly Sullivan, joining ASC as our skilled Surgeon! 🎉 Carly Sullivan, originally from Connecticut, earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Public Health degrees from Virginia Tech before attending veterinary school at Iowa State University, where she developed a passion for surgery. Following veterinary school, Carly completed a rotating internship at BluePearl in New York City, followed by surgical internships in Austin, TX, and Philadelphia, PA. She then pursued a three-year surgical residency in Philadelphia. After residency, Carly practiced at a busy referral clinic in New York City before recently moving back to Connecticut. Carly is interested in all aspects of veterinary surgery, specializing in both orthopedic and soft tissue cases. Her favorite procedures include emergent gastrointestinal surgeries, reconstructive procedures, fracture management, and TPLOs for dogs of all sizes. Outside of work, Carly enjoys barre classes, watching college football and basketball, dining out, and spending time at the beach with her husband, son, and their Rhodesian Ridgeback named Ryder. During this heat wave, it’s important to keep your pet well-hydrated! Generally, your pet should drink about one ounce of water for each pound of body weight. That may need to increase by 3-4x depending on their exposure to heat, activity levels, and diet. Encourage your pet to drink more water by: 💧 Always supplying fresh water 💧 Clean the water bowl daily 💧 For pets that prefer running water, try a pet fountain 💧 Add wet food or more raw fruits and vegetables to their diet (just double-check that they are safe for your pet to consume) Your pet may be dehydrated if they’re experiencing loss of appetite, reduced energy, lethargy, panting, dry eyes, nose, or gums, or loss of skin elasticity. If your pet experiences dehydration, contact ASC at (914) 457-4000 immediately. We are open 24/7!

Riley was presented to the ASC Neurology service on an emergency basis for evaluation of acute back pain and paralysis of his hind limbs. Dr. Gutierrez and the neurology team quickly assessed Riley and perform a same-day MRI to diagnose intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). 🩺 IVDD is one of the most common neurologic emergencies, and symptoms can vary from pain to total paralysis of the limbs. This is caused by herniation of disc material and subsequent compression of the spinal cord (“slipped disc”). In cases of total paralysis such as Riley's, emergency surgery is recommended to relieve alleviate disc herniation and compression. While IVDD is more common in older dogs, certain breeds are predisposed to developing it more than others. For example, Dachshunds, like Riley, are particularly prone to it! In the few days following surgery, Riley was already making great improvements and able to walk again! 💓

While you're having fun with family and friends this Memorial Day Weekend, remember the following tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday: ⭐ Cookouts are popular this holiday weekend, but keep your pets safe by avoiding these toxic foods: alcohol, raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and avocado. ⭐ Supervise pets around water to prevent accidents; consider using flotation devices for dogs on boats and discourage drinking from pools or saltwater. ⭐ Ensure your pet's safety with proper identification, especially during times of increased escape risk like fireworks or thunderstorms. ⭐ Ensure pets have enough water and shade outdoors to avoid dehydration. As a reminder, ASC will be open for the holiday weekend, with their usual 24/7 emergency care hours. 📲 (914) 457-4000 🌐 https://lnkd.in/ekYf5UJP
