From disaster planning to wilderness survival to personal safety, they all share one common theme: the people who engage in these activities value privacy. In this episode of Privacy Files, Kevin Estela talks about how his training in survival and bushcraft have taught him why privacy is so important. Kevin is one of the preeminent experts on the topic of wilderness survival and bushcraft skills. He has consulted for the History Channel, written more than 100 articles and spent nearly two years as host of the Fieldcraft Survival podcast. Kevin is also author of the book 101 Sills You Need to Survive in the Woods. We talk about a variety of things related to preparedness and survival--whether in the wilderness, or back at home in the city. Kevin shares a couple of eye-popping stories that underscore why he takes privacy seriously. One story involves a stalker. The other is an important lesson about why it's critical to use social media cautiously. One of the key takeaways from this interview is that privacy is often about safety. And living privately begins with developing a survivalist mindset. During the interview, she explains how her approach to "privacy by design" involves working at the intersection of engineering, law and policy, and cybersecurity. Saima says that one of the challenges privacy professionals face worldwide is the fact that 80% of the world's data is unstructured. She also discusses what's involved in conducting a privacy impact assessment. To wrap up the episode, Saima weighs in on smart device technology, AI and digital footprints, and even offers some advice for people considering a career as a privacy professional. From cybercrime to fraud, the industry of organized crime is big business. Globally, it's measured in the trillions of dollars. In this episode of Privacy Files, we talk to a former FBI agent who spent his entire career working to put organized criminals behind bars. Inspired by his father's 38-year career with the NYPD, Kenneth Strange helped the American government combat terrorism, the cartels and global fraud. He summed up his heroic adventures in the book A Cop's Son: One G-Man's Fight Against Jihad, Global Fraud and the Cartels. Ken's career has taken him to more than 65 countries, resulting in countless lessons about life, culture and staying safe while surrounded by danger. We cover many topics including online romance scams and the risks of sharing too much personal data online. Having employed many Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques himself over the course of his law enforcement career, Ken is all too familiar with the growing problem of digital exhaust. While Ken says the federal government did an excellent job protecting his privacy and personal safety during his career, he admits most people are not so lucky and must take data and identity protection very seriously. America's largest water utility company, American Water, has revealed that it was the target of a cyberattack. With a rise in hacks targeting US water infrastructure, one US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) spokesperson said, "All drinking water and wastewater systems are at risk — large and small, urban and rural." Overall, the EPA says that some water systems have "alarming cybersecurity vulnerabilities", such as default passwords that have not been updated, vulnerable single login setups and former employees who retained systems access. American Water asserts that no water or wastewater facilities or operations have been impacted, and water remains safe to drink. Although it's still too early to ascertain if any customer information has been breached. Companies are losing customer data at an unprecedented pace.
