On August 22, 2024, Senate Bill 2822 and Assembly Bill 3986 was signed into effect. The bill amends the existing legislation from a 20% limit for attorneys fees for workers’ compensation cases to a 25% limit. The increase is to account for the increasing complexity of the modern day workers’ compensation attorney and allow for better representation. There are concerns that this increase will raise the cost of workers’ compensation for employers and small businesses.

Assembly Bill 5909 and Senate Bill 4267 were recently signed into law in New Jersey, revising workers’ compensation coverage to include coverage for injuries to volunteer as well as part-time public safety and law enforcement workers when the injury occurs in a response to an emergency. The law adds that responding to an emergency is considered compensable. The law expands first responders covered under workers' compensation to include volunteer and part-time firefighters, police officers, and first aid or rescue squad members. Additionally, it expands coverage to career emergency medical technicians and paramedics engaged in public emergency services.
