About us

Founded in 1909, the AOCS is an international scientific society with more than 4,500 members in over 90 countries. AOCS offers a forum for the exchange of ideas, information, and experience among its members and others who have a professional interest in the science and technology of fats, oils, surfactants, detergents, and related materials. AOCS Mission: AOCS advances the science and technology of oils, fats, proteins, surfactants, and related materials, enriching the lives of people everywhere. As an international professional organization, we ● provide current and emerging information and disseminate research results in oils, fats, lipids, proteins, surfactants and related materials, through our meetings, publications, and web presence; ● develop and uphold methods of analysis used in global trade and research, conduct proficiency testing, provide reference materials, and coordinate with other standards developers including ISO and Codex Alimentarius; ● facilitate and strengthen interactions among professionals through meetings, specialized interest groups and other networking opportunities; and, ● collaborate with other scientific societies and related organizations to promote the advancement of science. Her expertise lies in fats and oils technology, particularly the enzymatic synthesis of functional oils. She has an impressive body of work, including over 100 peer-reviewed publications and leadership of the book "Recent Advances in Edible Fats and Oils Technology". Among her accolades, she was awarded the Gold Award and Best Invention for Women at the 35th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition for her work on palm milk production.     🎉 Meet Harthika M., our passionate AOCS-SCIG Member-at-Large! 🎉 🌾 Harthika is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry, specializing in Food Science at Carleton University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology and a master’s in Analytical Chemistry. Her cutting-edge research focuses on upcycling oat bran to maximize its nutrient potential for diverse applications. 🏆 Throughout her academic journey, Harthika has earned multiple accolades, including departmental scholarships, a donor-funded award, two university prizes, and recognition on the Dean’s Honors List. She also received two gold medals for her outstanding performance in Food Science during her bachelor’s degree. 🌍 Beyond her research, Harthika is actively involved in STEM education. She’s been a volunteer with Let’s Talk Science for nearly two years, earning the title of "Volunteer of the Month." As a leader in the Food Science community, she previously served as the newsletter coordinator and is now the event coordinator for the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST) student committee. Additionally, she represents students in both the Protein and Food Chemistry Divisions of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and served as a Global Link Mentor for MITAC’s Global Link Internship Program. 🤝 Harthika’s enthusiasm for research, leadership, and community engagement continues to inspire her peers.
