Blade signings bring members of project communities together with our partners and the Apex team to celebrate the culmination of the development process. These project stakeholders can gather, share memories, and recognize the monumental achievement of having built a clean energy facility—one that promises decades of environmental and economic benefits for the surrounding area and the entire nation.

It felt great to celebrate the construction of the Downeast Wind project in Washington County, Maine. A testament to the perseverance of the Apex Clean Energy team, especially developer Robert Gee, the project was more than a decade in the making. The 126-megawatt project will generate enough clean energy to power the equivalent of 37,000 average U.S. homes and has delivered big benefits to the community, including more than $20 million in new revenue to support local priorities and over $100 million spent with Maine-based contractors and suppliers. You can read more about the project and our blade-signing event on the project website here: https://lnkd.in/gEpdBMRH

Thanks to Ducks Unlimited, we can broaden the scope of our mission to foster the well-being of environments and habitats near our projects. It’s collaboration with like-minded partners like DU that allows us to grow the impact of the energy transition.

Last week, the Apex Clean Energy (Apex) Environmental Team along with special guests Ken Young (CEO), Scott Koziar (EVP) and J Hess (Dev legal counsel) went to North Dakota to celebrate a couple of significant Apex Conservation Grant Program milestones achieved with Ducks Unlimited (DU). In just three plus years, the Apex Conservation Grant Program has donated more than $1 million in voluntary Project contributions to DU, making us a Diamond Legacy Sponsor. In the State of ND, our Bowman Wind project made a $200,000 commitment to DU’s Preserve our Prairies Initiative. A few of the highlights. To celebrate our partnership and the Apex Conservation Grant Program contribution milestones, we got to break bread with several DU staff on both Monday and Tuesday evening. On Tuesday, various DU staff put on a Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) 101 introductory class at their Bismarck Great Plains Regional office to educate us on why the PPR geography is so special for ducks, avian, bat, and insect species and what they are doing to protect and conserve what is left of the native prairie grasslands and pothole wetlands. After the classroom work, we headed out to DU’s Coteau Ranch near Wing ND to see an expansive tract of native mixed grass prairie intermixed with a whole lot of pristine prairie potholes. DU’s Catrina Terry showcased an interactive aquatic invertebrate sampling ‘how to’ and species identification along with some birding. The field event was closed out with an unveiling of a commemorative Apex Clean Energy duck memorializing Bowman Wind’s Preserve our Prairie Conservation Grant contribution on the Coteau Ranch art wall. Thanks to our CEO Ken Young, Scott Koziar and J Hess for making the trek along with all of the planning and support provided by DU’s Eric Lindstrom and Candace Miller. Also, a special thanks to DU’s Dr. Kaylan Kemink, Dr. Johann Walker, Jonas Davis, Catrina Terry, and William Palarski for taking the time to educate and showcase their work during the PPR 101 sessions and for sharing additional knowledge in the field. Lastly, many thanks to DU’s Benjamin Romans for taking such great field photos and photo credits go to him for the pics used in this post. #lifeatapex

The plummeting costs of renewable energy have been a driving factor for the energy transition—clean power facilities can now produce electricity at prices that most fossil fuel plants simply cannot match. Four-fifths of the 473 GW of renewable capacity added globally last year will be able to generate power more cheaply than fossil fuels. Read more:

    R. Lee Stauter, ROCC Manager — “I have an eclectic resume. After college, I worked for a culinary school, doing recruiting across the South, which had me traveling a lot. On the side I had a photography business—eventually I got out of recruiting and just did photography. I absolutely loved it, but my wife and I were having more kids, and in photography you have to be chasing the next gig. So I was still always on the road. One day, I got a call from my brother-in-law, who worked in the wind energy industry, and he said, ‘Hey, you’re about to get a phone call from a Houston phone number. Make sure you answer it.’ It was somebody at BP Wind who told me I’d been recommended for a contract position. Eventually a full-time spot opened up and I shoved my foot in the door. That’s how I got into wind. I think what appeals to me about operations is that the atmosphere is similar to what I enjoyed about photography: you never know what your day is going to look like. You’re always having to assess the situation that you're in the middle of, reference the right procedure or training, and get the job done. A lot of the time, things are pretty normal, and we like to keep it that way—that means everything's working how it’s supposed to—but when it’s exciting, it’s exciting in the right ways because you’re working with a team to arrive at the place you need to get to. Doing the right thing when nobody’s looking is what the folks in operations are hired to do. After hours and on weekends, you’re by yourself. It would be very easy to just mail it in, but we have a team that cares. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do here at Apex, but I think I’m more proud to be a part of a team that genuinely cares about its work.” #LifeAtApex

The positive impacts of clean energy projects can be felt at nearly every level of the local economy. Beyond the tax revenue and lease payments, community businesses often play a role in supporting the construction of these facilities—either directly, as contractors providing services for the project, or by housing and feeding the onsite workers to help make sure they are supported as they carry out their work.
