Why is the US Defense Industrial Base so Isolated from the US Economy? “Excessive defense industry consolidation and inadequate competition are real challenges for the DOD, but there is another closely related problem that is often overlooked and understudied: the isolation of the defense industrial base from the wider commercial economy.” Continuing the warm-up to Apex 2025, tune into Gregory C. Allen, Douglas Berenson and Vago Muradian in this captivating conversation exploring the state of the US defense industry, how it has become increasingly isolated from commercial industry and the implications on innovation. 🔉 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/emcT8AHe 👉 Join the conversation: https://lnkd.in/e7UxgeCQ #Apex #DefenseTech #DefenseInnovation #EW #USDefenseIndustrialBase #DualUseTech Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Oliver Wyman

Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) Generative AI for Joint Planning (Thunderforge) Solicitation just posted! The joint planning process is complex, time-consuming, and resource-intensive. Planners and other staff members must synthesize large amounts of information from diverse sources, consider multiple courses of action (COA), and produce detailed operational plans and orders - often under significant time pressure. #GenerativeAI has the potential to augment human planners and command staff by rapidly processing information, producing draft planning products, and ultimately aiding in generating options. The United States Department of Defense is looking for solutions with some or all of the following: -Information synthesis and analysis -Plan and order development -Course of action development and wargaming -Operational security and information assurance -User interface -Experience delivering complex capabilities Full details here: https://lnkd.in/eMDTFD8A Responses requested by 9/6/2024.

Uncrewed systems (UxS) can provide a decisive impact on the battlefield but to be effective operators need control while operating in contested spectrum environments. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU)’s Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) project is an evolution of its Blue UAS initiative, and provides a resilient baseline hardware and software capability that will allow for rapid iteration to respond to a constantly changing battlefield environment. “We have seen first hand in Ukraine the quick tempo and change in war and how spectrum challenges affect tactical level operations. This is a vitally important effort to provide critical tools to allow our warfighters to win if forced to fight, and enable them to respond quickly to changing battlefield conditions,” said David Michelson, DIU autonomy portfolio director. After a competitive solicitation period, DIU selected Auterion, ModalAI, and Neros Technologies to develop prototype solutions, with initial demonstration and testing to begin two months after contract award. I’m launching the Code Breakers internship program this fall. College coders interested in Defense Tech, get your clearance process started now with this program. One of the biggest hurdles to getting the brightest minds to contribute to our nation’s security, defense, and prosperity is individuals’ ability to get hands on keyboard quickly to support the most critical missions. In the time it takes most people to obtain a security clearance, we will have pushed ~4-5M software upgrades to our fleet. It can feel like an eternity by modern technology standards. And we don’t have time to waste. We need our brightest minds read-on, spun-up, and closing the code chain. The threats are coming at us fast. And the truth you aren’t allowed to say out loud: our victory is no longer assured. It will take a whole-of-society effort to mobilize and overcome this undeclared national crisis. We need everyone in the game-including, maybe especially, our new talent. That’s why, if you get a summer internship or full-time offer from Palantir this fall, we will immediately employ you as a contractor upon acceptance. This will enable us to start your security clearance process while in school before your summer experience begins. Ideally you will show up cleared and ready to work at the pointy end of the spear - yes in Washington D.C., but also directly with ops users out forward in the Pacific region, Europe and around the world. We’re doing this not only as a long-term strategic investment in Palantir’s college talent, but also as a knock-on effect to the entire defense ecosystem - to create a broader team of America's best engineers who are able to support our country's most critical missions. And we encourage other Defense Tech companies to implement a similar program. You can, of course, contribute a great deal as an uncleared developer, but there are limits to what you can achieve without the first principled and experiential understanding from seeing the problems in a classified setting. You can’t truly understand the weight of the mission, or the importance of your hard work, until you see it firsthand highside. It’s time to come in from the cold, and to join the elite group of engineers who are coding the repositories of democracy. Answer the call. Focusing on the role DIU is taking in driving speed and scale across the United States Department of Defense, DIU Director, Doug Beck and U.S. European Command embed, Col. Glenn McCartan spoke at the recent National Defense Industrial Association - (NDIA) Emerging Technologies Conference in Washington, D.C. last week. Beck spoke about the team's progress in support of the Replicator initiative which is compressing years of work into a matter of months, and has recently awarded autonomous maritime domain capabilities in partnership with the US Navy, in support of the initiatives goal to deliver all-domain attritable autonomous systems to warfighters at a scale of multiple thousands, across multiple warfighting domains by August 2025. In addition, DIU is increasingly able to apply lessons learned and iterate more quickly by embedding in Combatant Commands. McCartan highlighted how DIU’s 3.0 strategy is catalyzing the international innovation ecosystem, expanding partnerships, and working to build a culture of trust and collaboration https://lnkd.in/edFX5Psn
