If you’ve been following along with us this summer, you know we’re big on Community Science. Using community sourced observations from iNaturalist, AMC’s Mountain Watch program, and the USA National Phenology Network, AMC Research team members Dr. Jordon Tourville, Georgia Murray, and Dr. Sarah Nelson recently published a paper in the journal Ecology studying the impacts of climate change on spring plant lifecycles along the Appalachian Trail. Their data analysis found that understory plants along the AT are active earlier in the year with warming, with life cycles for plants and trees in the northern and southern AT regions advancing 5 days forward, and 10 days forward in the mid-Atlantic. Understanding how climate change is impacting plant and tree activity allows us to better understand the responses of forests to climate change. While warmer temperatures may be potentially beneficial for understory plants along the northern AT, they may also see a time mismatch with their usual pollinators, and increased vulnerability to late winter frosts. Our research team continues to use community science to ask questions and find answers about the impacts of climate change on our outdoor spaces. It’s that time of year: days are shorter, temperatures are cooling, and the sweet, earthy smell of fall is in the air. Across the Northeast, trees are bursting into color. What’s the reason behind the changing leaves? And why might this foliage season look different from the last, or the next? AMC’s Ella Gurney and Jenny O’Connell have been doing some research, and what they've found might surprise you. Click the link below to learn about the science behind the colors you see, how climate change may impact fall colors in the future, and our fall foliage prediction for 2024 🍁: https://lnkd.in/e59b9Sjd

Thanks for all your warm words about our new look! For the design nerds out there, we're sharing a conversation with AMC's Creative Manager, Amanda Garza, who shares some stories from behind the scenes of our logo and color palette development: outdoors.org/newlook This visual transformation allows us to paint a clearer vision of how we want AMC to show up in our neck of the woods: with a warm hello at the intersection of people and the outdoors.

AMC’s Pro Trail Crew has completed its second All Persons Trail with Mass Audubon, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary last week! This project, spearheaded by AMC Pro Trail Crew Supervisor Becca McNeeley, brought together AMC crew members, supervisors, and leaders to create a trail that connects more people with nature, regardless of ability. Becca, who proudly cut the ribbon, reflects: "The Long Pasture project was one of the most enjoyable projects for me, since I've been at AMC. 13 AMC employees worked on the trail at some point, all contributing with hardworking hands, which I adore. This adds to the sentimentality for me." With a third trail already underway in Lowell, MA, we are excited to continue expanding access to the outdoors!
