  • One of our cofounders Connor Joyce recently went on the Behavioral Grooves Podcast to discuss his thoughts on the field of the applied behavioral science, and introduce some some of the thinking behind the ABSA Standards. Stay tuned for an upcoming new resource release! https://lnkd.in/eeCCxMXB

  • The beauty of ABSA https://lnkd.in/gapgWSE Like one of my colleagues so eloquently put it, I also did not know Behavioral Science existed till I met a Behavioral Scientist - in my case on LinkedIn. But it does. If you go by the wide variety of content that has found its way on LinkedIn and in the form of books, forums, online magazines, and the number of people who like to call themselves Behavioral Scientists. Applied Behavioral Science addresses the existential symptoms, causes, effects, and societal impacts of human behavior for the present duration as well as across longer periods of time. That’s one of the first admirable characteristics of the Applied Behavioral Science Association (ABSA), that, while it has a demonstrable conceptual base, it has rooted itself in practical reality. That’s what I mean by beauty, just in case that did not come through. Applied Behavioral Science needs people who use the principles of Applied Behavioral Science and address existential human events and other phenomena. What ABSA has done in this first release of its standards for Behavioral Scientists is to classify and formally document two kinds of practitioners in the workspace. Those who flirt with elements of human behavior as a relatively small part of their professional life and those that are very much in bed with human behavior since they need to grasp and work with every possible contour of the subject. It’s a great start and if, as any part of your work, you need to address human behavior, or vagaries thereof this would be a good time to start following ABSA. Harsh Mulik

  • From Mandy Varley - Senior Behavioral Scientist at Torch - https://lnkd.in/gzjpibzK I didn’t know Behavioral Science existed until I met an actual Behavioral Scientist. It was 2019 and I had such a job crush on what she was doing. I couldn’t imagine being lucky enough to spend all day thinking about why people do what they do & trying to figure out ways to get them to change their behavior. At the time I was a PhD student in Organizational Behavior and an Executive Coach. Once upon a time in my early career, I worked in marketing. I already had lots of experience with human behavior. With the knowledge of this new field, I would have the opportunity to help people change their behavior in ways that benefit them. Today I’m a Senior Behavioral Scientist. I love what I do and I love this field. It is exciting to be part of creating a new discipline of Applied Behavioral Science and figuring out what it means to do research in a corporate setting. Each Applied Behavioral Scientist I meet has a slightly different background and what they do ranges from conducting research to product development to user testing to sales enablement. From a common set of skills comes many different job roles and ways to bring more science into business decisions. When I learned about the Applied Behavioral Science Association (ABSA) and their desire to define the skills and knowledge Behavioral Scientists have in common, I couldn’t wait to get involved. Starting to define what we all share in common helps us to better understand ourselves and what we can offer the world as a new and distinct field. As we build agreement on what being a Behavioral Scientist means, we can communicate this better to organizations we work for as well as people we meet at dinner parties. I’m so proud of the work ABSA has done to create the first set of standards for associate & professional behavioral scientists. I invite you to take a look at the standards and let us know how you can use them in things like designing job descriptions, vetting behavioral scientists, or better understanding your BeSci colleagues!
