Building AI SRE Agents to fix on call and incident response

Our team spent the last five months building an AI agent to help debug production issues faster. Here's how you can do it yourself in 30 minutes 👇 Everyone’s building an AI agent. Or so they say. But I have yet to see a really good step-by-step guide to build one. Especially not one for engineering teams. So we’re writing the definitive guide to building an AI agent for engineering teams 📖 🧑💻 v1 of the guide is a 3-part series, and there will be many more to come as new tools come out and as we continue to improve our own agent. Part 1 is live on our website (check the comments for the link). It covers: 1. How to set up a new application in Chainlit 2. How to connect your application to an LLM The rest of the guide shows you how to: 1. Make your Agent faster and add real-time “typing” (similar to ChatGPT) 2. Give your Agent a personality and specialization 3. Give your Agent the ability to search a collection of files 4. Integrate your Agent with external tools (in this case, PagerDuty) I’m sending out a sneak peak of Part 2 to people I’m connected with. If you want it, all you have to do is: 1. Comment on this post telling me you want Part 2 2. Make sure we’re connected if we aren’t already so I can send it to you 😄

AI is everywhere in SRE discussions these days. Some are calling it revolutionary, while others think it's just a passing trend. But how much of the AI buzz do you think is actually grounded in reality? Let's see where you stand:

Head of Engineering @ Aptible | helping SRE teams knock down knowledge silos, increase automation, and improve MTTR

I could've avoided so many headaches when I started on Aptible AI if I'd known then what I know now about building AI tools for engineering teams 🤦♀️ The good news is: now you can learn from our mistakes! Since we started building Aptible AI, I’ve talked to countless people who are in the middle of building their own AI Agent for incident response. But the ecosystem changes so quickly, it’s tough to keep up. So, based on our experience building an AI Agent for SRE teams, we put together a guide with steps and code snippets for all the engineers out there who are looking for some guidance with their own agent. Part 1 of our 3-part guide is out now and covers: - Why everyone’s building an AI Agent for incident response and what AI is good at compared to humans (if done right) - 7 decisions we’ve made so far with Aptible AI’s SRE Agent and pro tips to consider before you start building - Step-by-step instructions for setting up an application with Chainlit and connecting it to gpt-4o In parts 2 and 3, we’ll show you how to make your Agent faster, give it a personality, and give it (safe) access to the information it needs to have. 📖 Want a copy? Comment here or connect with me and send me a DM, and I’ll share the link with ya!

Building AI SRE Agents to fix on call and incident response

AI isn’t going to replace software engineers (or SREs) anytime soon. But if you build AI thoughtfully, it will make their lives easier. And we’ve got just the guide to show you how 📖 Asking engineers to go on call without an AI assistant in 2024 is risky because you’re… - Expecting on call engineers to check observability tools they don’t frequently use - Relying on engineers to debug availability issues that hit multiple services they rarely touch - Assuming on call engineers can find docs and runbooks they might only touch 1x per year - Resigning yourself to frequent escalations to more experienced engineers/SREs Once we built our AI agent, on call became much easier, ending an era of unnecessary stress while also keeping MTTR strong. TODAY we’ve released Part 1 of a three-part guide that will show you how to build your own AI SRE assistant. In the full guide we’ll cover everything we learned while we built Aptible AI including every mistake and how we overcame them (and, of course, the code you need to get started on your own agent). If you want it: 1. Comment on this post 2. Connect with me so I can DM you a private link!

Just deployed something big? Or maybe it’s all hands on deck for a rollback? Aptible’s got you. Our new after-success and after-failure hooks automate what happens post-deployment. Think auto-Slack alerts for wins, or cleaning up failed restarts like a pro. Throw your custom logic in .aptible.yml, and let these hooks do the heavy lifting. 💻📈 Now your deployments can scale smoother than a fresh software update: https://lnkd.in/e9pFhYzT #NoMoreManualTasks #DevOps #AptibleAutomates

Building AI SRE Agents to fix on call and incident response

We fixed our on call and incident response by building an AI copilot 👌 And we've noticed there's really not enough practical info out there on how to use AI to improve your engineering team, beyond using code generator tools. So we wrote a guide (code snippets and all) that gets you from zero to your own highly capable AI for your engineers to use. This 3-part guide includes: - Background info on why the best engineering teams are building or adopting an AI copilot - All of the mistakes we made on our journey, and how we overcame them (and how you can avoid them) - Step-by-step instructions (and code) to build your own using Chainlit and GPT-4o and how to integrate with your whole stack (Slack, Notion, Confluence, PagerDuty, etc.) We’re releasing part 1 of the guide (7 pro tips, 6 code snippets) next week, but we’ve got a sneak peek available now for anyone who comments or DMs me (just be sure to go ahead and connect with me so I can send you the link)!
