Our paper was accepted to ICLR 2025!!! 🚀 Today, we got great news that our paper "Bridging the Data Provenance Gap Across Text, Speech, and Video" was accepted to one of the Top AI conferences in the world, ICLR 2025! 🚀 We conducted the most comprehensive audit of the global data ecosystem to date, spanning nearly 4,000 text, speech, and video datasets from 1990 to 2024. We analyzed sourcing trends, representation gaps, and use restrictions across 67 countries and 608 languages. It's fantastic to be part of this incredible project. Our new paper has been released!!!! 🚀 We made an audit of the global data ecosystem across text ✏️, speech 📢, and video 📽️ datasets revealing key trends: 📈 Data Sourcing Shifts ➡️ Synthetic data use soared from ~10M tokens pre-2018 to 100B+ in 2024. ➡️ 70%+ of speech and video data now comes from YouTube, despite restrictive Terms of Service. 🛑 Hidden Restrictions ➡️ While ~30% of datasets have permissive licenses, 78% of sources include anti-crawling restrictions, complicating compliance. 🌍 Representation Gaps ➡️ Less than 0.2% of dataset content originates from Africa or South America. ➡️ Representation distribution hasn’t improved significantly in over a decade. This study seeks to quantify trends in data sourcing, representation, and restrictions across the ecosystem and provide developers with tools to navigate datasets ethically and inclusively. Measuring these characteristics at scale is crucial for the community to evaluate its progress, highlighting the urgent need for improved transparency, better restriction documentation, and more equitable representation.
