About us
Twenty-four hours a day – seven days a week – 365 days a year, the more than 2,000 people of the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) serve the nation as proud stewards of some of the most iconic buildings and grounds in the world. Across the U.S. Capitol campus, architects, engineers and technicians design, enhance, and maintain new and historic structures, spaces, and building systems. Employees in various trades such as electricians, plumbers, masons, and carpenters maintain the facilities and infrastructure in optimal condition. Gardeners and grounds keepers create colorful displays and care for hundreds of acres of lawns and plantings. All of these efforts are directed at making the work of the Congress, the Supreme Court and Library of Congress – and the experience of the millions of visitors annually – as smooth, efficient and enjoyable as possible. Guides and Visitor Assistants at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center provide an exceptional experience for visitors to the nation's Capitol.

This month we celebrate 200 years of the #USCapitol Rotunda. 🎉 The Rotunda was completed under the direction of Charles Bulfinch by the time of the visit of the Marquis de Lafayette in October 1824. More details on today's blog: https://lnkd.in/eyhCYuqp The place where America honors its greatest figures, events in the Rotunda have included art unveilings, a presidential inauguration, Congressional Gold Medal ceremonies and lying in state services. It has also hosted millions of visitors, awed by the grandeur of the Dome above, intended to recall the Pantheon, the ancient Roman temple.

The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and #USCapitol Dome are all emblematic shapes of Washington, D.C. But in addition to these architectural juggernauts, two smaller, more understated buildings on the National Mall often draw the eye. ⬇️

The #USCapitol's newest statue! Arkansas' Johnny Cash joined the #NSHCollection this week. The depiction centers on an imagined moment: Cash, as a mature artist, visits his childhood home on the way to perform at a festival named after him. In his right hand, Cash carries a Bible, a reference to his Christian faith. And a guitar is slung over his back, the neck pointing toward the ground, modeled from a Martin D-35 acoustic guitar, the type of guitar Cash frequently used onstage. 🎸🖤🔥: https://lnkd.in/ekQ__G4N

The #USCapitol cornerstone was laid #OTD 1793. 🥁 Contemporary Masonic practice included the laying of an inscribed metal plate along with a cornerstone. Corn, wine, and oil were used to consecrate the stone.

The Genius of America pediment is located at the central, east entrance to the #USCapitol above the Columbus Doors. The central figure represents America, who rests her right arm on a shield inscribed "USA"; the shield is supported by an altar bearing the inscription "July 4, 1776." America points to Justice, who lifts scales in her left hand and in her right hand holds a scroll inscribed "Constitution, 17 September 1787." To America's left are an Eagle and the figure of Hope, who rests her arm on an anchor. The entire pediment is 81 feet 6 inches in length and the figures are 9 feet high. 📜 #ConstitutionDay

Each year, the Architect of the Capitol selects the annual #CapitolChristmasTree in consultation with the U.S. Forest Service. This year's tree is a Sitka spruce from the Wrangell Ranger District in Alaska's Tongass National Forest. 🌲➡️🏛️: https://lnkd.in/etjV6prH
