Making Earth 🌍 the best place in Space 🚀 #SpaceEnablers

About us

With roots reaching back more than 70 years into the history of space activity in Europe, ArianeGroup embodies Franco–German technological space program heritage. We are responsible for both design and the entire production chain of the Ariane 5 and Ariane 6 rockets, including launch services by our Arianespace subsidiary. We are also prime contractor for the strategic missiles of the French oceanic deterrent force. Our wide-ranging expertise covers propulsion systems and equipment for space and defense programs. Space launchers are indispensable to enable mankind to benefit from space activities and technologies, since they are the sole way to access space. Our vocation is to make our planet Earth, our unique and precious home, a better, self-sufficient, and peaceful place for everyone to live in. That is why we are true #Space Enablers. ArianeGroup is a joint venture equally owned by Airbus and Safran, and employs approximately 9,000 highly qualified staff in France and Germany.

Can you imagine what it would feel like to launch your work into space? Our #RocketMakers can, and, with a twist, thousands of space enthusiasts can now too. How? Maker of fun, educational kits for children Pandacraft launched, in collaboration with #ArianeGroup, built-it-yourself cardboard models of #Ariane6, and, guess what? It is selling faster than a rocket launch countdown! 🚀 It’s amazing to see how our passion for space continues to inspire not only the engineers of today but also the #SpaceEnablers of tomorrow – Pandacraft caters for kids from 1 to 12, and let’s be honest, some space-loving adults too. 😉 Whether in the lab or living room, the excitement of creating something that can roar into space has no age limit. A big thank you to the teams who brought this collaboration to life and helped pass on the space bug to the next generation. Who knows? Some of these young dreamers may one day join us in shaping the future of #SpaceExploration. 🌌 #STEM #WorkInSpace

As #Ariane6 blasted through its first mission, the onboard camera captured the separation of the main stage and offered a stunning view. 🤩🚀 As the main stage fell away, it revealed the glinting silver top of the oxygen tank inside. This is one of the main stage’s two cryogenic liquid propellant tanks, which contain 125 tonnes of liquid oxygen and 25 tonnes of liquid hydrogen respectively. During lift-off and flight, they have to withstand enormous pressure and extreme temperatures. Our #SpaceEnablers tackle these challenges with innovative technologies and materials. Ariane 6’s new cryogenic tanks are made using friction stir welding. This new welding technique mechanically joins metals in a softened but still solid state, enhancing strength without the brittleness of conventional welding. This allows the use of a lighter mixture of aluminium and lithium compared to the aluminium alloy parts used on Ariane 5 – one of the measures to reduce the launcher’s mass. ✅ The tanks are carefully clothed with multi-layer insulation (MLI) to maintain the interior at the cryogenic temperatures required to liquefy the fuel while protecting the surrounding structure from the effects of extreme temperatures. ❄️ It’s the special MLI material on the tank’s bulkhead that makes the glittering silver shimmer seen inside the main stage. We are #RocketMakers – every detail counts in the colossal task of space exploration. Ariane 6 is testimony to the industrial masterpieces we are proud to develop. Stay tuned for further close-up looks at our #SpaceTechnologies. 🚀 #WorkInSpace #SpaceIndustry

In space, a 10 cm piece of debris can have the same impact as 240 kg of TNT explosive – a significant threat to all spacecraft. 💥 According to the European Space Agency - ESA, there are 35,000 objects larger than 10 cm in size, over a million between 1 and 10 cm, and around 130 million between 1 mm and 1 cm. On 10 September, a panel at the Space Forum in Toulouse, France, therefore asked the question: Is a sustainable space environment possible? Our Head of Security in Space programme BLANCHARD Hélène took part in this vital discussion, underscoring the necessity of being able to visualise the situation in space: “#SpaceSurveillance, combined with a network like #Helix, is an essential prerequisite for contributing to a sustainable space for launches, space pollution control and space mobility.” We extend our thanks to La Tribune Toulouse for the invitation and hosting these important debates. Tackling space debris and fostering #Sustainability in space are essential for harnessing the benefits of space for Earth. #SpaceEnablers #WorkInSpace #SpaceIndustry #LTSF2024

In the vast expanse of space, even a tiny speck can tell a monumental story. With Helix, our #SpaceSurveillance services turn these specks into reliable data. 🌍🛰️ Such a story unfolded this August when the JUICE probe performed a groundbreaking double Moon–Earth gravitational assist manoeuvre on its journey to the Jovian system – a first of its kind. But there’s more for the history books: Since its launch aboard the penultimate Ariane 5, the Helix network has been tracking the probe and managed to detect it at a record distance of around 500,000 km from Earth! Capturing such a small ‘white spot’ that resembles a star is incredibly complex. However, thanks to the precise pointing of our optical stations and sophisticated image processing algorithms developed in-house by our #SpaceEnablers, the JUICE spacecraft was located exactly where it was expected to be. These algorithms effectively distinguish stars from other objects, such as satellites or spacecraft, and determine their exact positions relative to the stars. This significant observation demonstrates the capability of the Helix network to detect and track objects in a wide range of orbits, from low Earth orbit (LEO) to geostationary orbit (GEO) and cis-lunar orbits, including crewed missions to the Moon. Helix provides high-precision day and night positioning and orbit determination data as well as analysis of space objects in a wide range of orbits. The service is ideally suited to the needs of both civil and military #Satellite operators, for surveillance, tracking and collision warnings. It enables these operators to protect their satellites against all types of risks. #WorkInSpace #SpaceIndustry

Did you notice the gleaming white Vulcain 2.1 engine during the inaugural launch of #Ariane6? 🚀 The main stage, powered by the advanced Vulcain 2.1 engine, features a cutting-edge thermal protection system of white metallic tiles. These tiles, coated with Prosial®, are designed to shield the engine from extreme temperatures, particularly in the four-booster Ariane 64 configuration. Prosial® is an innovative, ultra-light, and highly effective silicon-based insulant developed by #ArianeGroup. It’s applied in layers, making it ideal for protecting complexly-shaped parts from severe thermal conditions. This material is extensively used across Ariane 6, safeguarding both the main and upper stages. It is spray-layered onto parts, making it ideal for protecting components with complex geometries through multi-layer applications. It is also used extensively on other parts of Ariane 6, including the main and upper stages, to protect them from extreme thermal conditions. Our Issac site supplies over 750 pieces of this thermal protection for each Ariane launcher and produces dozens of tonnes of Prosial® raw material per year. This material is then shipped to other sites, such as Bremen, where it is applied directly to components such as tanks. As #SpaceEnablers, we take pride in our comprehensive capabilities in space technology – from engineering to material science – contributing to every phase of our projects. This integrative approach ensures excellence and innovation at every level of our operations. Stay tuned for more insights into the innovative materials and services that our diverse portfolio has to offer! 🚀 #SpaceIndustry #WorkInSpace #Composites #MaterialScience #RocketMakers
