Art Bridges is a new foundation dedicated to expanding access to American art.

About us

Art Bridges is a foundation that shares outstanding works of American art with those that have limited access to our country’s most meaningful works. Art Bridges organizes exhibitions of American art for display at public and academic art museums of all sizes. These exhibitions draw from Art Bridges’ growing collection and partner institutions. The exhibitions supported by Art Bridges are engaging, content-rich, and include in-depth educational and interpretive materials. They range from single-object loans to fully developed thematic exhibitions, and include support for programming, audience engagement, and meaningful evaluation. Art Bridges is deeply interested in furthering work that is innovative and experimental; multi-disciplinary; and audience-building.

This is AWSOM. Alice L. Walton School of Medicine is reshaping medical education in a new state-of-the-art facility in Bentonville, Arkansas, where the next generation of physician leaders will experience an innovative, four-year MD program that enhances conventional medical education with a whole-person approach to care. The one-of-a-kind facility is designed by Polk Stanley Wilcox with landscape and rooftop park design by OSD and is being brought to life by Crossland Construction Company, Inc. AWSOM is located on the Crystal Bridges campus, home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Heartland Whole Health Institute, minutes from downtown Bentonville and connected to the cities of Northwest Arkansas via the 40-mile paved Razorback Greenway. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dsnE4WDj     #AWSOM has received preliminary accreditation status from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and expects applications to open on AMCAS by early November 2024 for its first class of 48 students, starting July 14, 2025. #MedicalEducation #NorthwestArkansas #BentonvilleAR

We're excited to celebrate a special milestone in our partnership with the Peoria Riverfront Museum—five incredible years of art sharing and community engagement!     Since our inaugural 2019 collaboration, “Vantage Points: Contemporary Photography from the Whitney Museum of American Art,” we’ve watched the Peoria Riverfront Museum flourish into a cultural hub where creativity and connection intersect.       Our journey together has been full of meaningful moments—most recently, the September opening of “Glenn Ligon: I Am Somebody.” At the heart of this contemporary art exhibition is “Untitled (I Am Somebody),” which is on loan from our very own collection and is part of the artist’s renowned Door Paintings series. The work references a poem that was written by civil rights activist Rev. William Holmes Borders in the 1950s and later popularized by Rev. Jesse Jackson.      On November 1, the Peoria Riverfront Museum will present a grouping of artworks from Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art through our Partner Loan Network in "Solitude: The Necessity of Art,” marking the eighth exhibition and 15th project in our five-year partnership.    We are deeply grateful for the Peoria Riverfront Museum’s unwavering commitment to fostering community engagement and presenting world-class American art. We look forward to many more years of collaboration! We are excited to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of two artists in our collection, Mark Bradford and Alex Katz, who are both 2023 National Medal of Arts recipients!   This award represents the highest honor bestowed upon artists and arts patrons by the U.S. federal government. President Biden presented medals to the 2022 and 2023 recipients in a private ceremony at the White House earlier this week, recognizing 20 individuals or groups for their contributions to the “excellence, growth, support, and availability of the arts” in our country.    Among the recipients are other visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, singers, musicians, actresses, producers, and arts leaders—including Carrie Mae Weems, Steven Spielberg, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Idina Menzel, and Randy Batista—as well as the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.    The 2022 and 2023 National Humanities Medals were presented at the same ceremony, honoring individuals like social justice philanthropist and Art Bridges board member Darren Walker and the late chef and author Anthony Bourdain, as well as organizations like the Mellon Foundation.    Our heartfelt congratulations to all the honorees! https://lnkd.in/g7bKjbZe

Sometimes museums go where their existing donors lead, and sometimes museums can chart a new direction and gain donor support for it. With inspiration from Art Bridges Foundation and others, the Whitney Museum of American Art is showing that donors (including one very generous artist, Julie Mehretu) are willing to support not just new buildings and collections but increased public access. Whitney Director Scott Rothkopf said it just right when he told reporter @Kelly Crow: “In any museum, you’re choosing what to spend money on—be it storage or loans or whatever—but getting more young people in here is the most meaningful thing I can think of to subsidize.”

We are proud to announce two significant appointments at CMA: Rae Root joins us as our third Roy Lichtenstein Curatorial Fellow and Grace Tran joins us as our inaugural Art Bridges Fellow. Rae Root, currently a PhD candidate at the University of Oregon, brings a wealth of experience in North American art and has held curatorial roles at the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Taft Museum of Art. Funded by a generous grant from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, Root’s appointment as the third Roy Lichtenstein Fellow reflects CMA’s commitment to nurture emerging curatorial talent and underscores Roy Lichtenstein's legacy, whose connection to Columbus remains a cornerstone of this fellowship. Grace Tran, a recent graduate of Pennsylvania State University, joins CMA as the museum’s first Art Bridges Foundation Fellow. This national program is dedicated to increasing access to American art and fostering leadership opportunities for underrepresented communities. Tran will collaborate across departments and with partnering institutions to implement new programming, enhance collection-sharing projects, and contribute to exhibitions. Please join us in welcoming Rae and Grace to the CMA community as they embark on these impactful fellowships! Left: Rae Root | Right: Grace Tran https://lnkd.in/gqcqVHXb

We are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievement of the Hudson River Museum (HRM) in receiving the Award of Excellence from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN) for its Free First Fridays initiative! These awards are given to projects that “exemplify creativity and professional vision resulting in a contribution to the preservation and interpretation of the historic scene, material culture, and diversity of the region.” With support from our Access for All initiative, the HRM offers free admission and special programming, featuring collaborations with community-based arts groups, on the first Friday of every month from 5-8 p.m. Since launching last December, the series has attracted over 1,000 visitors, including many first-timers, from more than 102 zip codes across the region. Our mission is to ensure that all communities across the country have access to the transformative power of art—and HRM’s Free First Fridays initiative is a perfect embodiment of this, inviting audiences from all walks of life to connect with art in meaningful ways. Here’s to celebrating HRM and our shared commitment to accessibility in the arts! Photo Credit: Free First Fridays, Mariachi for May with Mariachi Citlalli, May 2024, photo by Camille Knop.
