At ArtCloud, we understand the importance of gallery-artist relationships, so we compiled a few tips for navigating these relationships, along with three art history stories about artist relationships: 1. Peggy Guggenheim, known for her avant-garde taste and unorthodox personality, famously supported Dalí’s work. Embodying their unusual relationship, Dalí once presented Guggenheim with a unique gift—a mink coat adorned with miniature bread rolls.   2. Georgia O’Keeffe shared a unique bond with her gallerist and husband, Alfred Stieglitz. Before a gallery opening, O’Keeffe rearranged her paintings on the walls, swapping their positions to see if Stieglitz would notice. He did. . .eventually.   3. Pablo Picasso and his art dealer, Daniel Henry Kahnweiler, had a funny relationship. Picasso once created fake artworks mimicking his style, initially fooling Kahnweiler before revealing the prank. Luckily, Kahnweiler thought it was hilarious. #ModernArt #ArtGallery #ArtTech

The British Museum is slowly recovering 1,500 objects missing from their collection. Gems and jewelry from Ancient Greece and Rome make up most of their missing objects. One of these Roman jewelry pieces, worth $60,000, was listed on eBay for $48. ArtNet reports on the Roman jewelry piece listed for 0.08% of its valuation. Read about it here:

Let's look at two more seminal LGBTQ+ artists! First is Marie Lauencin (French, 1883-1956). Part of a community of avant-garde artists and creatives open about their sexuality, Laurencin developed a unique approach to abstraction centered on the representation of women and animals, which often represent LGBTQ+ relationships. Laurencin broke from Cubist norms in pursuing a specifically feminine aesthetic, depicting young women in idyllic settings constructing worlds without men, and challenging male-dominated and heteronormative modern European art. Second, we present Robert Mapplethorpe. Known for his often divisive, controversial subject matter, Mapplethorpe (American, 1946-1989) pushed the boundaries of art and visual culture, contributing to the shift from a heteronormative male gaze to a more inclusive take on artistic depictions of beauty. In the late 1970s, Mapplethorpe began documenting his peers in the BDSM scene. These provocative photographs tested the boundaries of creative freedom and sparked public debate about censorship, art funding, and the objectification of Black people in the LGBTQ+ community. There’s so much to learn about LGBTQ+ artists, and who says the study of LGBTQ+ artists has to be contained to June? #Art #ModernArt #ContemporaryArt #Pride

What a great idea: an art fair for artists to clear out their studios and give away their unsold works to collectors who otherwise couldn't have afforded the artworks. Read more about the Zero Art Fair and its founders, Jennifer Dalton and William Powhida, on ArtNet.
