#EventRecap - On September 26, 2024, Asia Society Northern California hosted a conversation between Ali Velshi, MSNBC Chief Correspondent and host of “Velshi", and MR Rangaswami, Founder of Indiaspora and Co-Founder of Sand Hill Group. Video video from our event here: https://lnkd.in/gg-MnB7m Velshi began by sharing takeaways from his most recent book, Small Acts of Courage: A Legacy of Endurance and the Fight for Democracy, which chronicles his family history from India to South Africa to Canada and the U.S.A. He encouraged the audience to focus on enacting small acts of courage, which add up in community impact to make larger ripples in the world. In recounting his family history, Velshi reflected on the role of migration in building Asian America, North America, and the world, and the importance of countering current negative narratives about immigration that seek to polarize rather than humanize. Velshi also offered insights into the state of democracy globally, highlighting the imperative to save democracy during in the 2024 U.S. Presidential elections rather than getting mired in bipartisan issues at this time. During audience Q&A, Ali suggested combating disinformation by triangulating (seeking out multiple sources of information), and addressed ties between the U.S. economy and military spending. #Velshi #elections #journalism #AsiaSociety

Yesterday, we hosted a Roundtable on Executive Roundtable on Technology Innovation in East Asia and the Role of Patents with Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and Mark Cohen, Senior Tech Fellow at Asia Society Northern California. A very fruitful discussion on key topics from IP in U.S.-China relations, technology clusters, and future challenges in AI development and trade security. Thank you to our wonderful speakers!

On September 12 Asia Society Seattle celebrated an extraordinary year of programs and community engagement, marking its one-year anniversary from its launch! Today, we are excited to share a speech from the evening by Janet Yang, Golden Globe-winning producer and President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In her talk, she reflected on the growth of AAPI representation in media, highlighting her work on "The Joy Luck Club" and the success of "Crazy Rich Asians" 25 years later. Janet Yang emphasized the positive shift in media, noting the contrast between the strong box office performance of AAPI-led films and their historically limited budgets.
