One hundred and four years ago, the ratification of the 19th Amendment granted American women the right to vote, marking a monumental step toward fulfilling our nation’s core values of dignity, fairness, freedom, and equality. On Women’s Equality Day, we honor the courageous women who fought tirelessly to secure this right, as well as those who continue to work for a more just and equitable future for all women and girls.
However, the passage of the 19th Amendment was only the beginning. For many women of color, the right to vote wasn’t fully realized until decades later with the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
Today, as we continue to face threats to voting rights and challenges to women’s fundamental freedoms, it’s clear that the fight for equality is far from over.
These ongoing struggles remind us that our work as a nation is never truly finished; ensuring the full promise of the 19th Amendment remains as crucial now as it was over a century ago.
As we reflect on this day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to protecting and advancing the rights of all women. The progress we’ve made must be both celebrated and safeguarded, knowing that the pursuit of equality is a continuous journey.
Together, we can ensure that every woman’s voice is heard and every right is upheld.
