Kerala Temple Festival Firecracker Explosion: A firework explosion injured at least 154 people, including nine seriously, during a festival at the Anjootambalam Veerakavu temple near Neeleswaram in Kasaragod district on the night between Monday and Tuesday. According to police, the incident occurred during the annual kaliyattam ritual, also known as theyyam, attended by thousands. The explosion happened when sparks from ongoing fireworks fell into the storage shed for firecrackers, known as the magazine, located less than 100 meters from the fire-line where the fireworks were being displayed. This led to a series of blasts, causing panic among the crowd and resulting in burn injuries for many attendees. District Collector K Inbasekar informed reporters that temple authorities had not obtained permission for the fireworks display, and the police have detained the office bearers. Those with severe injuries are being treated at the government medical college in Kannur, while others have been admitted to hospitals across Kasaragod and Mangaluru. A case has also been filed against the temple committee’s office bearers. Rachel Gupta, a 20-year-old from Jalandhar, Punjab, has made history as the first Indian and only the third Asian to win the prestigious Miss Grand International title. The 12th edition of this pageant, which started in late September, culminated with the final stage in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 25, where Rachel was crowned the winner—a landmark achievement for India on the global stage. Speaking exclusively to TNIE from Bangkok, Rachel shared her excitement, saying, “Bringing such a significant achievement to my country fills me with immense pride and joy. Winning the crown is just the beginning; the real challenge now is proving myself worthy of this title, and I am fully committed to it.” The competition included 68 contestants from various countries and territories, chosen through national contests or handpicked. Rachel secured her place by winning Miss Grand India 2024, hosted by the Galamanand Group in August. She also earned several sub-titles at the national level, such as Miss Top Model, Best in Ramp Walk, Beauty with Purpose, and Best National Costume. "Rachel showed exceptional promise from the start. Despite being only 20, her experience in pageantry was evident in her poise, choreography, and stage presence.
