The #ASNT 2024 Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, offered valuable insights into advancements in Nondestructive Testing and opportunities to expand my professional network. Three key highlights made it particularly worthwhile for me. 1. I completed the 2023/2024 ASNT RISE Leadership Program, where I was exposed to a plethora of strategies to champion effective leadership. Learning alongside an amazing cohort of professionals in the NDT/NDE space made the experience more enriching. The mentorship piece of the program connected me with Bruce Hunter, 👏👏who has continually provided valuable guidance. The program concluded with a Capstone Presentation, where I presented on 'The Tree of NDT Opportunities for Early Career Professionals in the NDT Field.' I celebrate Ruth Staat’s leadership in coordinating the training sessions. Thanks to Roger Engelbert and Dr Ronnie D Ingram for their excellent delivery. 2. I also received the ASNT Foundation Fellowship Award, supporting my research endeavors in NDT. This award funds my proposed research on 'Nondestructive Evaluation of Low Velocity Impact Damage in Polymer Composites: Assessing Damage Parameters using Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Phased Array Ultrasonics.' In October, I posted a preview about the presentation that Heather Cowles, and I were giving at the ASNT (The American Society for Nondestructive Testing) annual meeting sponsors by the ASNT Foundation regarding workforce development and compensation results from in-depth interviews were conducted with industry stakeholders, market research surveys distributed to over 17,180 NDT professionals and focus groups with key audiences including Certified Practitioners, Educators/Trainers, NDT Management, and HR/Recruiter/Staffing. For those who could not attend, here are the answers: 1. How does an NDT engineer’s salary stack up against similar roles in other industries? -         When the average NDT Engineering salary is compared to the average salary of engineering and operations technologists and technicians across all industries as reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the NDT positions are significantly higher. -         Note: Salary differences are broken down by job role, certification, professional tenure, company type, industry, highest level of education, and supervisory responsibilities in the full report. 2. What skills are critical for success in the field of NDT and how would Technician, managers and engineers rate their own performance in these areas? -         There are the skills or knowledge that are most critical for success in the NDT field: ·        interpreting and reporting inspection results ·        knowledge of procedures and standards ·        attention to detail ·        critical thinking ·        and work ethic. While most felt they excelled in these areas, the practitioner skill self-assessment revealed some opportunities for skill training in the ability to interpret and report results of inspections, and knowledge of procedures and standards, as comparatively fewer feel they excel in these skills. As you look across the population, knowledge of procedures and standards is the lowest for each segment. 3. Are people optimistic about the future of NDT or are they looking to leave the industry?   ·        A majority (or 82%) of respondents intend to continue their career in NDT into the immediate future. ·        A majority (or 81%) of respondents are optimistic about the future of NDT. ·        Overall, the practitioners are optimistic about their chosen career, their futures, and support of the industry. 📸: QIS’s advanced nondestructive testing (NDT) team inspects a wind tower using the phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) technique and two mobilized PAUT robots as part of a larger wind energy project. The personnel involved in the project are required to possess UT Level II and Level III certifications according to ISO 9712 standards, demonstrating their professional capabilities in this field. Challenging weather conditions at the construction site made transportation and inspec- tion difficult. However, with a high level of determination, the QIS team overcame these difficulties, working day and night and braving sun and rain to meet the project deadlines. Meanwhile, the office team played a crucial role in ensuring a solid support system, main- taining a steady flow of supplies, equipment, and documentation. In the end, the achieved results reflected the collective efforts of the entire team. QIS received high praise from the client, a source of great motivation and pride not only for the project team but for the entire company.
