Abstract: Effective biohazardous waste management is essential for safety and environmental sustainability, especially in laboratories and healthcare settings. This presentation outlines a project aimed at improving waste management practices in laboratories by addressing challenges such as inefficient waste collection, odors, injury risks, and high disposal costs.
Key initiatives included a data-driven approach involving cost analysis, staff feedback, and vendor consultations to evaluate current practices. Based on these insights, a new campus-wide strategy was implemented.
The presentation concludes with significant improvements, including reduced plastic use, lower injury risks, and fewer odor issues, demonstrating the benefits of strategic waste management reforms for enhancing safety in laboratory environments.

Speaker Bio: Monica earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and her Master's in Public Health. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she worked as a Hazardous Materials Technician for Environmental, Health, & Safety at Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Janelia Research Campus. Presently, she is the Biosafety Specialist for the EH&S department at HHMI, where she is responsible for ensuring the safe handling and disposal of biological materials. She has a background in fostering a culture of safety and contributing to scientific advancement in a safe and responsible manner.
