New from Atlas Obscura: "My first visit to the SS United States was too brief: it was a hot day, and the Port Authority representative seemed happy to cut it short. Standing outside the chain-link fence surrounding the property, I couldn't believe I had actually done it: I had been aboard the ship I had dreamed about for years. It hadn't taken long for me to fall in love with her — and that appreciation has only deepened with more visits and the passage of time. I had hoped that it would be repurposed as a museum or maybe even as a hotel, like the Queen Mary. It seems rather foolish now, but in the face of loss sometimes hope is all we have." https://lnkd.in/gJxGHHVp

This is one of America’s spookiest hotels. 🏨 👻 Once known as “The Showplace of the West,” the hotel has been living up to its paranormal reputation since its inauguration in 1927. Guests and staff alike have consistently reported unexplained phenomena, including flickering lights, moving objects, disembodied noises, and the persistent feeling of being watched. Can you guess the hotel? Hint: It was the on-location home for Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant during the filming of the 1959 classic North by Northwest. Drop your guesses in the comments. 👇

The golf Is mini, but the stakes are huge. ⛳ We partnered with Visit Myrtle Beach to showcase the most competitive #golf tournament you’ve never heard of. Picture this: You’re setting up a challenging shot, you’re eyeing the hole, you're about to putt—and then a volcano erupts. It’s the Hawaiian Rumble mini golf course’s most elaborate special effect, and owner Bob Detwiler is convinced that this volcano controls the weather in North Myrtle Beach. The latest from Atlas Obscura: "Capturing the smallest elements of our world in dazzling detail — and celebrating the science behind them — has been a hallmark of the Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition for 50 years. Nikon Instruments Inc. announced the 2024 competition winners today, but really, we're all winners when it comes to viewing these gasp-worthy works of art and labors of the lab." https://lnkd.in/gkRp3QGd

A single one of these fruits, carefully harvested, can fetch more than $300 by the time it arrives in a shop in New York or Montreal. Yet the fruit may never be eaten at all. This is the Cedro Diamante, an ancient citrus better known to many as the citron or etrog—a fruit packed with symbolic and historic significance that serves as a ritual object during the annual festival of Sukkot. For centuries, families have cultivated these precious fruits in small orchards peppering the sheltered valleys of the Riviera dei Cedri, a tiny slice of coastal Calabria barely six miles long. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/ehksngcT
