Join AUCD in Celebrating AAC Awareness Month this October! It is estimated that over 2 million people use Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC). Virtually all AAC users use multiple types of AAC to communicate, to be understood, and to participate in society. This is referred to as an “AAC system,” or sometimes “multimodal AAC.” Stay tuned this month as we continue to spread awareness and share stories about how the AUCD Network is advancing the use of AAC. #AAC #AugmentativeAlternativeCommunication #AACAwarenessMonth #Inclusion #InclusiveCommunication ID 1: Blue AUCD graphic that reads: Celebrate AAC Awareness Month this October! There is a large blue arrow with white text over it that reads: What is Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC)? ID 2: Blue AUCD graphic with a large A, text reads: Augmentative. Augmentative means to add to someone’s speech, like with sign language or pictures. ID 3: Blue AUCD graphic with a large A, text reads: Alternative. Alternative is for when someone is unable to speak or when their speech is not understood by others. People may need a different way to communicate, other than speech. ID 4: Blue AUCD graphic with a large C, text reads: Communication. Communication is all the different ways we interact with each other. ID 5: Blue AUCD graphic with a large AAC written, text reads: AAC refers to all the ways someone communicates besides talking and includes low-tech or no-tech language-based tools like handwriting or alphabet boards, speech generating devices, as well as gestures, eye gaze, facial expressions, and more.
