Excited to share that our research paper titled "Structural Performance of Large-Scale 3D-Printed Walls Subjected to Axial Compression Load" has been published in the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering! Together with my esteemed co-authors Juliana Wagner, M.Sc., Mohsen Khanverdi, and Sreekanta Das, we've delved into the transformative potential of additive manufacturing in the construction industry. Our study critically examines the current limitations in design guidelines and structural assessments for 3D-printed structural components. By employing large-scale experimental methods, we evaluated the performance of hollow unreinforced 3D-printed masonry walls under axial compressive loads. We're also introducing a design methodology that aligns with American and Canadian masonry standards, further enhanced by linear elastic 3D finite element analysis. Key findings demonstrate that 3D-printed infills significantly contribute to stress redistribution post-cracking. The proposed wall assembly profile exceeded the American masonry standard's minimum requirement for a load-bearing wall by a factor of 94. This research not only underscores the feasibility of 3D-printed structural walls but also paves the way for innovative analysis and design practices. We're eager to see how these insights will inspire further advancements in the field.
